In this first episode of WTSA’s Listen Local (available April 7th), host Mitch Harrison plays music from local bands Whiskey Treaty Roadshow and Jake McKelvie & The Countertops, and bands appearing at local area venues, including Colin Hay, Carsie Blanton, Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, and .Amythyst Kiah.

In this episode Mitch interviews Jake McKelvie who has some local shows coming up. Music from Peterborough New Hampshire-based Modern Fools is featured, as they will be playing at Nova Arts for Thing in the Spring. The Meditarian surf rock band Habina Habina is featured prior to their show at Next Stage in Putney. The Wailin’ Jennys bring there angelically blended harmonies to the show prior to their appearance at the Academy of Music in Northampton. The Grammy nominated Wood Brothers are heard on this episode ahead of their gig at the Colonial Theatre in Keene. Rickie Lee Jones is also featured, as she will play in Turners Falls.

In this May 5th episode Carsie Blanton is featured leading up to her show at Next Stage Arts in Putney. Enjoy the fiddle music of Henneke Cassel as a teaser leading up to her show also at Next Stage. The Americana music of Mama’s Marmalade is included leading up to them opening for Burlington-based jam band Cabinet Trio at the Stone Church in Brat. The Wood Brothers are also featured with there appearance at the Colonial Theatre in Keene coming up soon. Rosanne Cash will also be playing at the colonial theater in Keene soon and this episode includes her classic Seven Year Ache. Social Distortion’s treatment of Ring of Fire is included just for fun. New Orleans musician Anders Osborne is included in the episode leading up to his show at the Iron Horse in Northampton. John Langford and the Bright Shiners is also played, giving you a taste of their music before their appearance at Popolo in Bellows Falls.

In this May 19th episode the Wonder Women of Country are featured ahead of their appearance at the Green River Festival. Dominican Composer Yesser Tejeda makes the playlist this week leading up to his Bandwagon Summer Series concert through Next Stage Arts. Americana, goth, punk band Bridge City Sinners will have you scratching your head over musical genres. They will play the Stone Church at the end of May. Donna the Buffalo brings their zydeco-infused rock to the Iron Horse in June and they are featured on the show.

In this episode Mitch includes some John Gorka, leading up to his show at Next Stage Arts in Putney. The bluegrass band, Stumble Creek, makes the cut for this episode, as the Mole Hill Theater in Alstead is featured for the first time on Listen Local. Vermont native, Suitcase Junket, brings his unique talents to the Iron Horse and we hear a few of his songs. The cow punk of Jenny Don’t and the Spurs is on the playlist ahead of their show at Hawks and Reed. Providing some historical reference for the alt country/cow punk sound, the Long Ryders are included in the show. Catie Curtis is part of the show leading to her show at the Colonial in Keene. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes close the hour out.

Mitch leads off this show with a Father’s Day song from Ben Folds. Scottish fiddle music is included from Cantrip ahead of their show at Next Stage. Grammy nominated, Leslie Mendelson, is also included in this episode ahead of her show at the Colonial in Keene. A duet she does with Jackson Browne is also included, and a Jackson Browne classic done with Billy Strings is part of the show. British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg is featured leading up to his performance at the Academy of Music in Northampton. Treehouse Brewing in Deerfield has some great shows coming up and some Amos Lee and Old Crow Medicine show are played leading to shows there.

Mitch’s favorite singer-songwriter James McMurtry appears at the Iron Horse in the early fall so Mitch includes several songs from various points in McMurtry’s career. Phil Henry and Mark Erelli are featured leading up to their show at Next Stage Arts in Putney. Big Head Todd and the Monsters is featured ahead of their show at Treehouse Brewing in Deerfield. City and Colour is also part of this week’s show with him also playing at Treehouse. AJ Croce and Jim Croce are included in the show ahead of Croce plays Croce coming to the Colonial Theatre in Keene.

Mitch includes the single off Phish’s latest album to open the show. Adam Ezra Group is included ahead of their show at the Colonial Theatre in Keene. Vermont Americana artist Troy Ramey is featured leading up to his appearance at Next Stage Arts. Some southern funk by Eddie 9Volt is included ahead of the band’s show at the Iron Horse in Northampton. The Stone Church in Brat will be hosting the Dolly Rots so a couple of their’s are included. The fiddle and voice of Rhiannon Giddens is also featured ahead her show at Deerfield’s Treehouse Brewing.

Asleep at the Wheel is featured on Listen Local ahead of their show at the Academy of Music. Next Stage Arts in Putney has Slavic Soul Party coming up so one of their songs is included. Jeffrey Falcault’s music is also featured leading up to his appearance at the Iron Horse. Treehouse Brewing in Deerfield has Hiss Golden Messenger playing in the fall and some of their music is part of the show. The Felice Brothers are played ahead of their appearance at the Arcadia Folk Fest as is Mamma’s Marmalade.

The etherial harmonies of the Rainbow Girls grace this week’s Listen Local ahead of their performance at Next Stage Arts in Putney. The blues of Joanne Shaw Taylor is featured leading up to her appearance at the Iron Horse. Folk legend Tom Paxton is featured ahead of his performance at the Park Theater in Jaffrey, NH. The Stone Church is hosting Darlingside and their beautiful mournful music is included on the show. With Ray Wylie Hubbard playing at Bellows Falls Opera House in late September, Mitch includes a couple from this alt country songwriter.

The Americana sounds of the Early Risers is featured leading up to their show at Next Stage Arts in Putney. Sapien Joyride, an Amherst Indie Rock band, is on the schedule at the Iron Horse so they make the playlist this week. Blues artist, James Montgomery, will play the Park Theatre in Jaffrey, NH. Bruce Cockburn is featured ahead of his show at the Colonial in Keene. Chris Smither and the Motivators are playing at the Bellows Falls Opera House and his music is featured.

Session Americana is a Boston-based group. This band creates an atmosphere of a bunch of friends jamming in a living room as they crowd around a miced up collapsible bar table. Vintage instruments combine with modern ones to create a joyous sound.

Sam Robbins is a native of Portsmouth, NH who will also play the Iron Horse on May 23rd. He was the winner of the very prestigious Kerrville New Folk award in 2021.

Stephen Kellogg will perform at the Iron Horse. Kellogg is an accomplished singer-songwriter, comedian, storyteller and TedTalk presenter. He weaves all these things into his shows. He has shared the stage with Counting Crows and recorded a single with them titled, “Almost Woke You Up.”

One of them is singer-songwriter Buck Meek. Meek is backing singer and guitarist for the Brooklyn band Big Thief. He is a Texas native and is pursuing a solo career.

Episode 4 (April 28th): Featuring Dan Blakeslee, playing at Toadstool Books in Peterborough in May. Dan has played with the likes of Deer Tick, the Lumineers and Josh Ritter and cut his teeth in the subways of Boston. Murphy’s Blues will be playing Nova Arts in Keene and this episode features Jim Murphy’s slow agonizing blues. Also playing at Nova Arts in May, the indie folk vibe of Laney Ryan is featured. Hear more music from Jake McKelvie who is set to play a free show on May 11th at Next Chapter Records in Putney. Ska punk band the agonizers also appear in this episode, with the Interrupters thrown in for good measure. The Agonizers will be playing at Hawks and Reed in Greenfield Mass soon. Singer-songwriter Rupert Wates is featured, with his acoustic finger picking and heart breaking lyrics leading up to his show at Stage 33 in Bellows Falls, Vermont. The Iron Horse in Northampton is having their grand reopening and Griffin William Sherry will be playing soon. His solo work and his music with the Ghost of Paul Revere is featured.

John Gorka is making his annual appearance at Next Stage Arts in Putney and Mitch plays some of his favorites from Gorka’s 35-year catalog during this May 12th episode. Erin McKeown is also featured in this episode leading up to their show at the Iron Horse in Northampton. Amherst Genre bending Belle’s Bartok is also played during this episode ahead of their show at the Colonial in Keene. Vermont native Suitcase Junket joins the playlist. Brattleboro musician Ed Thanhouser’s indie folk is included ahead of his gig at Bar 580 in Brat.

Mitch’s in-studio guest for the May 26th episode is Brattleboro Musician and songwriter Derek O’Kanos. Derek does a few songs live leading up to his show at Bromley. Iris Dement is featured ahead of her appearance in Jaffrey, NH. Milton, who opened for Carsie Blanton at Next Stage, makes this week’s playlist. Two headliners at this year’s Green River Festival, Cake and the Fleet Foxes are featured. With the start of the Twilight on the Tavern Green shows in Putney, local bluegrass legends, the Stockwell Brothers, are included. The Ballroom Theives and Kathleen Edwards are also featured ahead of their gigs at the Iron Horse.

The Stone Church in Brat will be hosting Pokey LaFarge so Mitch includes a few from this eclectic musician. Previous guest of Listen Local, Jake McKelvie has released a new album and the single Pump Fake is included, leading up to his performance at the Rose Heart Club in Brattleboro. Dylan Patrick Ward is the headliner at that show and he is also featured. Twilight on the Tavern Green is once again up and running in Putney and Planet Zydeco is played ahead of their show. Some blues make the show this week, with Albert Cummings playing the Iron Horse and Brooks Young performing at the Colonial in Keene. Indie folk sensation Gregory Allen Isakov plays the Green River Festival and he is included on today’s show. The honky tonk sound of the Rear Defrosters is also featured.

Dave Alvin of Blasters fame and Jimmie Dale Gilmore are touring together and they make a stop at the Iron Horse in August. Mitch plays some old Jimmie Dale and Blasters stuff and includes a recent song they recorded together. A West Texas Exile song is also included, a band that includes Colin Gilmore. The Arcadia Folk Festival is coming up and the country blues of Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley is featured this week. Pahua and the Meridian Brothers are included leading up to their appearance at the Bandwagon Summer Series in Putney. I Draw Slow is part of the show ahead of their performance at Hawks and Reed in Greenfield. A live performance at stage 33 in Bellows Falls by Vermont singer-songwriter Tommy Crawford is featured. With some great shows coming up at Treehouse Brewing in Deerfield, Martin Sexton is part of Listen Local this week.

Mitch includes music from Brattleboro songwriter Derek O’Kanos ahead of his shows at the New Music Alliance Open Stage Showcase, The Big E and at Bromley Mountain. Marlborough NH-based band Party of the Sun is featured leading up to their appearance at Nova Arts in Keene. Next Stage Arts in Putney will host folk duo the Murphy Beds and their music is included. Robbie Fulks is part of the show leading up to his appearance at the Iron Horse. Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem will also play the Iron Horse and they are included on this week’s show, as is Arbo’s first band, Salamander Crossing.

Mitch leads off the show with Reverend Vince Anderson and His Love Choir before their Bandwagon Summer Series show in Putney. The Appalachian string sounds of the Wildmans is part of this week’s playlist leading up to their show at the Iron Horse. Prog band Gong will play the Iron Horse soon and they are featured on the show. Jolie Holland’s Indie Folk makes the cut this week ahead of her show at Nova Arts in Keene.
