Brattleboro is one of the towns providing complimentary parking in the downtown area for the final two weekends of the year. The town has transitioned from conventional parking meters to a kiosk system that allows payments via coins, credit cards, mobile applications, or text messages. Officials have indicated that the traditional meter poles were prone to damage, required significant management effort, and complicated snow removal operations. They assert that the new kiosks will help maintain the downtown’s appearance throughout the year.
The St. Johnsbury Police Department announced that Captain Jason Gray, who was shot last week, has returned home for the holidays. Despite the short notice of his hospital discharge, the community gathered to celebrate his homecoming. Captain Gray was injured while responding to a domestic violence call, and the suspect, 38-year-old Scott Mason, has been charged with attempted murder and is currently held without bail.
The Satanic Temple’s display outside the New Hampshire Statehouse has been vandalized for the second time in under two weeks. The Temple, which promotes values such as compassion, justice, and personal freedom, received a permit from Concord for the nativity display. Members argue that the repeated vandalism reflects hostility towards non-mainstream religions. They assert that if their statue is unwelcome, then no religious display should be allowed.
Individuals from Vermont and New Hampshire visited West Lebanon on Wednesday to explore the newly rebranded Revo Casino, previously a poker house downtown. This enhanced casino includes slot machines, which are prohibited in Vermont, as stated by the attorney general’s office. It is one of twelve charitable casinos in New Hampshire. Over a ten-day period, the Revo Casino supports two beneficiaries, namely the Grafton County Community Center and the New Hampshire Academy of Science, before rotating to two other charities or nonprofits, continuing this cycle throughout the year.
On Tuesday, Secretary of Administration Sarah Clark announced Vermont’s November 2024 revenue results. The Transportation and Education Funds surpassed their monthly cash flow targets set by the Emergency Board in July 2024, while the General Fund slightly fell short. The Meals & Rooms tax under performed again, and the typically dependable personal income tax also missed its target. Overall, the combined receipts for the General, Transportation, and Education Funds totaled $223.7 million, exceeding the $221.9 million consensus target by $1.8 million, or 0.8%.
