At 9:22 a.m. on Saturday, a report of a house fire on Johnson Hill Road was received. West Dover Fire Chief Richard Werner observed smoke from Wilmington as he approached the scene. Upon arrival, it was evident that the fire had been burning for some time, with only the walls of the structure remaining. The unoccupied second residence was fully engulfed in flames. An excavator was utilized to clear debris, allowing crews to access the ongoing fire. Initially, finding water was challenging due to frozen ponds, but once a reliable source was established, firefighting efforts proceeded effectively.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, the Hinsdale Fire Department responded to a barn fire on Oxbow Road, where they found a fully engulfed chicken coop. Firefighters suspect a heater used to warm the chickens during cold nights was the cause. The fire was brought under control within five minutes of arrival. Fortunately, there were no human injuries, but all the chickens in the coop are believed to have perished.
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture has announced that it is now the time to store the manure spreader in the barn. The annual winter manure spreading prohibition is currently in effect and will continue until April 1. During this period, the application of manure, compost, or spoiled feed on agricultural fields is not permitted. Additionally, it is against the “required agricultural practices” to distribute agricultural waste on frozen, saturated, or snow-covered fields at any time throughout the year. Winter spreading heightens the risk of runoff into waterways.
On Sunday morning, shortly after 10 a.m., Vermont State Police from the Westminster Barracks responded to a two-vehicle collision on Bellows Falls Road near River Road South in Putney. He was released on a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham County, Criminal Division, on February 4th.
Snowmobiling began yesterday in the Green Mountain National Forest, but U.S. Forest Service officials advise caution due to potential hazards from windfall. Although efforts have been made to clear trails, weak trees may fall under heavy snow, increasing risks early in the season. Snowmobiles are urged to proceed slowly and observe gates, signs, and closed trails. Weather permitting, snowmobiling is permitted on designated trails from December 16 to April 15. Users are encouraged to check the VAST trail update for details on conditions and closures.
