It suggested that, alongside state efforts to enhance housing and incentives for healthcare workers, hospitals might need to reduce bed capacity and consolidate services at Gifford Medical Center, Grace Cottage, Springfield, and North Country hospitals to form regional hubs for specialized care. However, officials from North Country and Gifford assert that the data contained errors, prompting the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems to request a retraction of the report from the GMCB.
A driver died following a crash involving two vehicles in Winchester on Tuesday morning. Police reported that shortly before 10 a.m., a 2016 Subaru collided with a 2014 Ford Escape on Manning Hill Road near the Village Laundromat. The Ford rolled over against a utility pole, trapping the 83-year-old driver from Peterborough, who sustained life-threatening injuries and later died at UMass Medical Center. The Subaru remained heavily damaged in the road, while its two occupants, a 30-year-old from Keene and a 1-year-old child, were taken to Cheshire Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Vermont forestry officials have implemented a burn ban due to recent wildfires, including a brushfire that scorched over 16 acres in Ludlow on Saturday. The fire, which ignited near East Lake Road, produced significant smoke and was challenging to control due to dry conditions, wind, and steep terrain. After approximately 6.5 hours, firefighters contained the blaze and spent Sunday addressing hot spots and removing burned trees. Fortunately, there were no injuries or structural damage, and the fire’s cause is under investigation. The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation has ordered all forest fire wardens to halt the issuance of burning permits until November 11.
Vermont State Police are investigating a hit-and-run that took place Monday at the Shell Jiffy Mart gas station on Rockingham Rd. At noon, a blue Jeep Wrangler collided with a parked Asplundh truck owned by Paul Cote, 37, of Albany, before fleeing the scene. The truck was parked behind the gas station. Authorities request that anyone with information contact the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600. Trooper Elias is in charge of the investigation.
U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Chair of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development and Energy, visited the White River National Fish Hatchery (NFH) with representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to emphasize the hatchery’s role in conserving Vermont’s fish and wildlife. During the visit, Senator Welch assisted in spawning lake trout. The hatchery is crucial for repopulating fish and combating invasive species. After being decommissioned for five years due to damage from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, it reopened in 2016 and has since focused on raising landlocked Atlantic salmon and lake trout to aid restoration in Lake Champlain and the Great Lakes.
