The air quality alert will continue today and into Sunday. .The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says the problem is wildfire smoke for all of Vermont. The Air Quality Index is expected to approach or exceed the Code Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. Sensitive groups include: people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teenagers. The Vermont Health Department says it’s OK to be active outside, but take more breaks and do less intense activities.
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services is expecting concentrations of fine particle air pollution to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive individuals in Cheshire, Grafton, and Sullivan Counties and at elevations above 2000 feet.
Two Colchester residents have been arrested in Brattleboro on drug charges. Vermont state police observed a motor vehicle violation on interstate 91 Friday afternoon and conducted a stop on the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle was identified as 41 year old Melinda Morgan and the passenger was identified as 39 year old Dale Taylor. Further investigation determined they were in possession of 1,100 glassine bags containing suspected fentanyl as well as crack/cocaine base and multiple firearms. Both were released on conditions until an August court date.
Vermont Senator Peter Welch says the U S Supreme Court decisions released this week are unacceptable and indefensible. Welch says the Court’s right-wing majority has rolled back rights and protections for people of color, LGBTQ+ people, women, students, and future generations. Welch says he will keep fighting for legislation to protect the rights of all Americans and provide much-needed checks and balances on the Supreme Court, including stronger ethical standards for Justices. He also plans to continue the Judiciary Committee’s investigation into exclusive access for special interests pushing a political agenda before the Court, saying we should follow the facts wherever they lead.
As of today, people under the age of 18 are no longer allowed to get married in Vermont . The change was approved by this year’s legislature. The license fee has also gone up by 20 dollars to 80 dollars .
The new fiscal year brings changes to Vermont’s workers compensation laws The changes will benefit individual Vermonters who are forced to leave work for a period of time due to a work-related injury. Vermonters who are out of work and have family members who rely on their income will see their weekly dependent benefits increase from $10 per dependent per week to $20 per dependent per week. In addition, low-income Vermonters receiving temporary partial disability will see their benefits increase. Additionally, Injured workers who need expensive medical equipment, such as wheelchairs or hearing aids, will be able to seek preauthorization from their employer’s insurance carriers for the purchase of such equipment.
