Several people were taken to the hospital after a car crashed into a school bus in Whitingham Tuesday morning. According to the Brattleboro Reformer, icy conditions led to the crash on Route 112. There were no serious injuries among the 13 students on board the Twin Valley School District bus. School officials notified parents about the crash.

 

Vermont Senator Peter Welch expressed concern that some of Trump’s cabinet selections might target political opponents. During a visit to Stowe, he highlighted Kash Patel, nominated to lead the FBI, and Pam Bondi, Trump’s second attorney general nominee. Welch seeks assurances of neutrality from them during the confirmation process. Additionally, Senator Bernie Sanders suggested that President Biden consider preemptive pardons for January 6th Committee members, a notion Welch rejected.

 

The University of Vermont men’s soccer team has returned home as national champions, igniting an electric atmosphere in Burlington. Fans, families, and friends gathered in large numbers to celebrate the team’s remarkable victory. The historic welcome began at Burlington International Airport, where enthusiastic supporters held signs and cheered for the team. Hall of Fame Coach Tom Brennan declared it “the greatest sporting event that ever happened in Vermont.” UVM student Ian Carpenter expressed overwhelming pride, reflecting the community’s support throughout the championship journey. The celebrations continued as the team returned to campus, now crowned national champions.

 

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on legalized sports betting, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) criticized online gambling companies FanDuel and DraftKings for exploiting gambling addiction and violating antitrust laws. This hearing followed a bipartisan letter from Senator Welch and Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) to Jonathan Kanter, Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, and Lina Khan, Chair of the FTC, expressing concerns about the companies’ practices. The lawmakers urged the Justice Department and the FTC to safeguard competition, emphasizing its importance in any market. Senator Welch also raised concerns about the emotional pressure sports betting places on children, students, and young athletes.

 

The man charged with shooting a St. Johnsbury police officer pleaded not guilty to five charges, including attempted first-degree murder. Scott Mason, 38, allegedly shot Police Captain Jason Gray with a shotgun last Friday, inflicting serious injuries, including a collapsed lung. He faces a potential life sentence.

 

New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan has reintroduced a bill to grant certain disabled veterans access to TSA PreCheck, which allows for expedited airport screening. Currently, active duty, reservists, and National Guard members receive this benefit at no charge. The VETS Safe Travel Act aims to extend this program to veterans who are amputees, paralyzed, or blind.
