Vermont Senator Peter Welch is advocating for the protection of migrants’ personal belongings. He has introduced the CBP Guidance on Personal Belongings Act, which aims to regulate how U.S. Customs and Border Patrol manages personal property during detentions. This legislation ensures that individuals in custody can retain their belongings and access necessary medications, addressing concerns raised by organizations that reported numerous cases of border patrol discarding migrants’ legal documents, medications, and religious items.
A 44-year-old man from New Hampshire, Christopher Huyler, has died while hiking in icy conditions in the White Mountains. A search operation with about 20 rescuers commenced late Friday, and his body was found early Saturday at 2,800 feet. Authorities indicated he had experienced a significant fall on the icy terrain.
The Brattleboro Fire Department is extending the ban on debris burning within Brattleboro for an additional week. During this period, burn permits will not be granted within the town. The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation initially implemented a statewide burn ban on October 28, which was scheduled to last until November 11. However, due to ongoing drought conditions, the ban has been prolonged in Bennington, Rutland, Windham, and Windsor Counties until November 25.
