New Hampshire’s mandatory retirement age for judges will remain at 70 after voters declined to extend it to 75. In a recent vote, approximately 65% supported the amendment, falling short of the required two-thirds majority. Proponents argued that the age limit, established in 1792, is outdated given increased life expectancy and the value of experience. Conversely, opponents emphasized the need for new perspectives in the judiciary. Retirement ages for judges differ nationwide, with Maine having no upper limit, Massachusetts at 70, and Vermont at 90.

What effects might mass deportations have in Vermont? A significant portion of the state’s tourism and agricultural sectors depends on immigrant labor, including undocumented workers. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to deport millions of undocumented migrants due to security issues. Approximately 1,000 undocumented workers are employed on Vermont dairy farms, while over 400 hold temporary visas for vegetable farms and orchards, contributing to a $1 billion impact. Immigration reform has been stagnant in Congress for years, and experts fear that mass deportations could deter those with temporary visas.
