Vice President Kamala Harris officially launched her presidential campaign following President Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the race and endorsing her as his successor. Within the initial 24 hours of receiving Biden’s support, Harris broke fundraising records by raising $81 million dollars in grassroots donations, as reported by her campaign.

 

Also on Monday, the AFL-CIO declared its unanimous endorsement of Harris for president. This influential union, with approximately 12.5 million members, is one of the largest in the country. Additionally, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, with 1.6 million members, The United Food and Commercial Workers, representing around 1.3 million members, The American Federation of Teachers, which has about 1.7 million members. The Retail, Wholesale, Department Store Union, which represents 100,000 workers nationwide, and The Service Employees International Union, with a membership exceeding 2 million.  That’s a total of 19.1 million, 100,000 people all officially endorsed Kamala Harris for President of the United States on Sunday and Monday.

 

Tito’s Taqueria, founded by Carlos “Tito” Garza in 2016, was fined by the U.S. Department of Labor for not paying workers overtime and making them share tips with shift managers. The settlement included $124,900 in back pay and tips to 126 employees at three locations in Brattleboro, Keene, N.H., and Greenfield, Mass. and $12,214 in civil fines. The violations are a common problem in the restaurant industry, according to Wage and Hour Division District Director Steven McKinney. In fiscal year 2023, the division recovered more than $29.6 million in back wages for nearly 26,000 food service workers nationwide. Help could be on the way for Vermont farmers affected by flooding. Governor Phil Scott has formally asked the United States Department of Agriculture to declare a disaster in Vermont. This declaration would enable financial aid, such as low-interest loans, to be accessible to farmers in designated counties. Governor Scott emphasized that numerous farmers are still struggling to recuperate from last year’s flooding, only to be impacted once more this summer. The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is urging affected farmers to report any damages by contacting 211.

 

State leaders in Vermont are ensuring that no child goes hungry over the summer by providing free meals at 175 meal sites across the state. Nearly 54,000 students participated in the free school lunch program in 2023, and children under 18 can access breakfast and lunch either on-site or to take home. Two people were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash in Westmoreland, New Hampshire on Sunday. New Hampshire State Police arrived at the intersection of Route 12 and River Road North at 12:38 p.m. A Toyota Sienna hit a 1980 Fiat Spider, which was waiting to turn left. The Fiat was then struck by a 2002 Ford F-350. The driver of the Sienna, Kim Carrier, 46, and a child in the Toyota were unharmed. However, the Fiat’s driver, Peter Friedrichs, 67, and his passenger, Irene Friedrichs, 73, were trapped with serious injuries. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to rescue them. The driver of the F-350, Landon Lake, 19, was uninjured.

 

The Vermont State Police were notified that an inmate, George G.
Tarbell of Brattleboro, age 40, assaulted a Southern State Correctional
Facility staff member on July 12 th. At the conclusion of the
investigation, Tarbell was issued a citation to appear in Vermont
Superior Court, Windsor Criminal Division on August 27 th at 8:00 AM
for the above charge. Tarbell remains incarcerated at SSCF.
