WTSA NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 8th 2024

Lawmakers are finalizing a bill that would ban the possession of ghost guns and firearms without serial numbers, which are assembled at home using separately purchased parts. Ghost guns, often made from kits or 3D-printed components, are not considered firearms under federal law, making them difficult to track for law enforcement. The proposed bill, S.209, aims to prohibit individuals from owning or transferring guns, frames, or receivers without serial numbers, including unfinished parts. Additionally, it would mandate that individuals imprint a serial number on any self-built gun or receiver.

Pro-Palestinian protesters continue to demonstrate at the University of Vermont despite the cancellation of the commencement speech by the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. The cancellation of Linda Thomas Greenfield is seen as a victory by the protesters, but they are concerned about disciplinary investigations initiated this week. UVM spokesperson Adam White emphasized the importance of allowing graduating students to enjoy their commencement without disruptions from a minority group. The university has not disclosed whether Thomas Greenfield withdrew voluntarily or if it was a decision made by the school. Disciplinary hearings for UVM students are commencing today (Wednesday). The outcome of the situation, including the impact on graduation and commencement in two weeks, remains uncertain if the protest encampment remains on campus.

Vermont now has an official state mushroom, the hericium americanum. Thanks to the efforts of middle school students and Rep. Michelle Bos-Lun. Gov. Phil Scott signed the bill into law on Tuesday, making Vermont the sixth state to have a designated state mushroom. The Mushroom can be cultivated or foraged in the woods and is said to have certain medicinal qualities. It’s also delicious if cooked properly.

American Red Cross of Northern New England volunteers and staff collaborated with local fire departments and the Vermont Division of Fire Safety to install 146 free smoke alarms during a home fire safety event in Washington County. They also provided information on fire prevention, emergency response, and escape planning. It is crucial to note that individuals have only two minutes to escape a home fire, emphasizing the importance of working smoke alarms in saving lives.
