On Saturday, residents from all corners of Vermont participated in Green Up Day, the unofficial state holiday dedicated to cleaning up trash and litter in preparation for summer outdoor activities. This year, Green Up Vermont made a concerted effort to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of pledges to pick up trash within a 24-hour period. Executive Director Kate Alberghini expressed optimism about achieving this goal, stating that they are well on their way to reaching the target of 5,000 signups. Despite challenges posed by river flooding and heavy rainfall in certain regions of the state, participants were enthusiastic and committed to making history on this special Green Up Day.

A New Hampshire jury awarded $38 million to the man who exposed abuse at the state’s youth detention center. David Meehan reported the abuse in 2017, sued the state three years later, and his case was the first to go to trial. This landmark case found the state negligent for allowing him to be beaten, raped, and held in solitary confinement as a teenager. The outcome of Meehan’s case could impact criminal cases, remaining lawsuits, and a settlement fund created by the state as an alternative to litigation.

Eligible households in Vermont can receive discounts on heat pump equipment and installation through Efficiency Vermont’s new offer. Low-income households can have up to $5,000 covered, while moderate-income households can receive 90% cash back, up to $4,500. This offer is made possible by $5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. Efficiency Vermont aims to encourage more Vermonters to choose environmentally friendly heating options with long-term savings. Ineligible households and rental property owners can also benefit from heat pump rebates and additional savings from other utilities.

As tensions rise between different factions, pro-Palestinian encampments on local college campuses continue. The University of Vermont has announced stricter enforcement of campus policy and U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield will not be speaking at graduation, meeting one of the protestors’ demands. While Dartmouth has disbanded the encampments, UVM has allowed them to remain. However, UVM President Suresh Garimella stated in an email to the UVM community that action will be taken against those who continuously violate university policies.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, the Brattleboro Retreat, and Grace Cottage Family Health & Hospital are conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to address the health needs of our community. The survey is available at www.tinyurl.com/WindhamCHNA until May 27, translated into multiple languages. All answers are anonymous. The CHNA process is required for nonprofit hospitals by the federal government every three years. Results will be made public by year’s end.

The 2024 USDA Maple Syrup Inquiry is currently underway in the Northeastern Region, collecting data from around 1,900 producers. This survey is crucial for maple syrup producers, processors, and markets to make informed decisions and support the industry. Vermont, being the largest maple syrup producer in the US, plays a significant role in this survey. If you have received the inquiry, please respond promptly as your input is vital for an accurate representation of maple syrup production in Vermont. Your information will remain confidential, and the data will be published in the Crop Production report on June 12th.
