Great Gulf of Canada plans to build a slopeside village in Killington, bringing in 2,300 housing units and $3 billion in investment over the next 25 years. The community currently attracts 1 million tourists annually but lacks a retail and residential hub like other ski areas in the state. The proposed project aims to create 1,000 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs.

A recent study discovered a 900% surge in blood infections at UVM Medical Center, which is likely attributed to opioids mixed with an animal tranquilizer called xylazine. This potent sedative, now present in the drug supply, leads to severe skin wounds that are highly susceptible to infection. Monica Raymond, an infection preventionist at the University of Vermont Medical Center, expressed astonishment at the extent of these wounds, some of which reach down to the bone. These wounds bear resemblance to the effects caused by xylazine, a street drug known as ‘tranq’ that dealers were already combining with opioids. The drug induces necrotic wounds that act as entry points for bacteria. In October 2021, the Vermont Department of Health highlighted the growing role of xylazine in fatal opioid overdoses within the state.

The Vermont Senate rejected Zoie Saunders as Secretary of Education due to her lack of experience and knowledge in the state’s education system. Governor Phil Scott then appointed her as interim secretary, which doesn’t require confirmation. The position had been vacant for over a year. The Senate vote was 19-9 against her nomination.

Vermont State Police announced that three individuals were arrested following a traffic stop in West Rutland on April 25. A search warrant was carried out on the driver, as well as the two passengers and the vehicle, leading to the discovery of $17,000 in cash, approximately 114 grams of cocaine, and three handguns with ammunition. The driver faced charges for possession of cocaine, possession of a depressant, and possession of heroin, which were linked to a previous investigation. The identities of the occupants were not disclosed by the police, and the charges against the two passengers were not revealed. All three individuals were taken into custody and were being held on bail.

On April 30, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont held a press conference to highlight the GunSafeVT initiative’s efforts in promoting secure gun storage and addressing gun violence in the state. U.S. Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest discussed the initiative’s achievements, such as creating PSAs, launching the gunsafevt.org website, promoting the Vermont State Police’s program for secure gun storage locations, and distributing over 4,000 free cable gun locks across the state.

Michelle Little of Brattleboro and Rebecca Thomas of Hinsdale, N.H., created a hygiene station on Elliott Street next to a former church to assist those in need. The idea came to Little about a month ago when she saw someone eating from a trash can while driving around with her daughter. They wanted to help the community, so they started the station. They stock it with hygiene items, water, snacks, and sometimes fresh fruit or baked goods. Initially, the sisters bought the products themselves, but after spreading the word on social media, they received more donations from local businesses and health offices.
