Zoie Saunders, previously rejected by the Vermont Senate, has been
reinstated as Interim Secretary of Education by Governor Phil Scott.
Despite the Senate’s opposition, Governor Scott utilized his power
under Chapter II, Section 20 of the State Constitution to reappoint
Saunders. Critics have expressed concerns about Saunders
background in Charter Schools USA and her recent involvement in the
consolidation of schools in Broward County Public Schools.

Two Vermonters linked to a 2022 murder are now facing additional charges in prison. Ashley Wicks and Shawn Bulson, both from Bennington, have denied being accessories after the fact. Wicks has also denied conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of Isaiah Rodriguez. Police have stated that Wicks and Bulson were prohibited from contacting each other while in separate prisons, but it was discovered that they were communicating through a third party. They have each received a new citation.

The Windsor County Sheriff’s Department has secured a new patrolling contract with Tunbridge, a town in Orange County. Tunbridge’s select board has approved a one-year contract worth $50,000 with the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department. Starting from July 1, this contract will cover approximately 15 patrol hours per week. In addition to patrolling in Chelsea, Windsor County deputies will now extend their services to Tunbridge. Both towns have expressed that the Orange County Sheriff’s Department lacked the necessary resources, making the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department a suitable choice.

After two unsuccessful budget votes, middle school students from Mount Abraham Unified School District gathered at Bristol Green on Monday to show their support for the latest proposed budget and its potential impact. This demonstration coincides with multiple school budgets being presented to voters again this week. In at least 10 school districts or supervisory unions in Vermont, residents will cast their votes for a second time on Tuesday. School officials across the state, from Rutland to the Champlain Islands, are optimistic that voters will approve these revised budgets following widespread cuts.

Vermont wildlife officials are asking for help from anglers as they stock a new strain of rainbow trout. The new Eagle Lake strain will be compared to the traditionally stocked Erwin-Arlee strain for catchability, survivability, and growth. The new fish look very similar but can be identified by a clipped ventral fin. Anglers can report their experience online. This is the final year the two strains will be stocked
as part of this evaluation. A final decision about which strain will
continue to be stocked in Vermont will be made in 2025.
