The Brattleboro homeless shelter where a staff member was brutally murdered a year ago will be replaced with a new shelter designed specifically for that purpose. Groundworks Collaborative, the agency providing housing and services for those in need, plans to build a $6 million, 40-bed state-of-the-art shelter. Groundworks officials aim to secure funding by June and start construction next spring.

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean is reportedly considering running for governor again in the 2024 election. While he has not confirmed or denied the reports, Dean stated that he will make a statement when he is in Vermont. Currently, no prominent Democrats have emerged to challenge Governor Phil Scott, who is expected to seek a fifth term. Governor Scott is highly regarded, as evidenced by a recent national poll ranking him as the most popular governor in the country. However, Dean also had a successful tenure as governor, serving for 5 1/2 terms from 1991 to 2003, making him the longest-serving governor in Vermont history.

Gas prices in Vermont have increased by 6 cents to $3.63 per gallon compared to last year and have significantly risen since last month. Experts attribute this spike to factors such as refinery maintenance, the transition to summer, and increased demand. Unfortunately, gas prices are not expected to decrease in the near future. However, there are apps and websites available to help you find the cheapest gas in your area if you want to save money at the pump.

Senator Bernie Sanders initiated an investigation into the pricing of Ozempic and Wegovy, two drugs effective in treating diabetes and obesity, which now have high costs. Vermont’s Susan Kemp from the Department of Health noted the slow rise in obesity rates in the state during her tenure. In 1990, 11% of Vermonters were obese, but now it has increased to 27%. The diabetes rate is at 8%, double what it was in 2000 according to the CDC. Sanders sent a letter to Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer, expressing concerns that the prices could financially strain Medicare, Medicaid, and the entire healthcare system.

The Vermont Senate passed a bill to protect bees and other pollinators from toxic pesticides, particularly neonicotinoids. Neonic-treated seeds and other neonic uses would be restricted in the future if H. 706 is approved. Vermont could become the second state to regulate neonics, following New York. The bill, approved by a 25-2 margin, now awaits the governor’s decision.
