WTSA NEWS FOR SATURDAY APRIL 27th 2024

A residence in Brattleboro sustained fire damage on Thursday evening. Emergency responders were dispatched to 166 Carriage Hill Road where they discovered the kitchen engulfed in flames. Although the occupants were not present during the incident, three dogs and a cat were found inside. Unfortunately, only one of the dogs survived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A Vermont man accused of killing a Rutland Police officer in a crash is requesting release from jail until his trial. Tate Rheaume, 20, appeared in court where prosecutors presented evidence to justify keeping him in custody on an aggravated murder charge. Prosecutors argue that the evidence, including an interview with a training officer who was in the cruiser during the crash, supports keeping Rheaume jailed without bail due to the strong likelihood of his guilt. The state is pursuing the most serious charge of aggravated murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence, due to the reckless nature of Rheaume’s actions. Surveillance video of the crash is expected to be presented as evidence. Rheaume will remain in custody without bail.

A diverse group of protestors gathered at the Statehouse to oppose bills they believe are eroding Vermont’s traditional identity and harming their livelihoods. Vermonters in hunting gear, logging attire, flannel, and orange ribbons expressed dissatisfaction with new taxes, fees, regulations, and policies burdening rural communities. Meghan Wayland from Northeast Kingdom Organizing highlighted the decline in dignified, skilled, and land-based work, emphasizing the disconnect between Montpelier lawmakers and the people’s concerns.

A Windsor County sheriff’s deputy caused a mis-trial in Barre back in March and has been fired. Cpl. Mark Belisle provided security at the Washington County court during the sexual assault trial of Kasey Giorgio, who was found guilty. However, the judge ruled that Belisle made inappropriate comments to a juror in March, leading to a tainted trial outcome. Belisle was placed on administrative leave and investigated by Barre City police. Windsor County Sheriff Ryan Palmer confirmed that Belisle is no longer employed with the department. Washington County State’s Attorney Michelle Donnelly intends to pursue charges against Kasey Giorgio again.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing Vermont with $1,000,000 to train city and town officials in disaster response and recovery. The Vermont League of Cities and Towns will oversee the funding, which will be used for training city officials in handling FEMA assistance applications and reimbursements, as well as developing disaster recovery training programs for various officials.
