Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak has declared his intention to seek reelection in November. Pieciak made the announcement on Thursday via the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. He expressed his desire to secure a second term as treasurer in order to further invest in housing, climate initiatives, and to advocate for improved conditions for Vermont workers. Pieciak emerged victorious in his initial term, garnering 66% of the vote after the retirement of former Treasurer Beth Pearce in 2022.

 

Authorities are searching for two suspects involved in a credit card
theft. The Vermont State Police say credit cards were stolen out of a
car at the Bellows Falls Country Club on Tuesday, April 16th and that
the cards were then used to make purchases at multiple stores in
Rockingham, Bellows Falls, Springfield, Chester, and Walpole. The
suspects are believed to be driving a dark-colored SUV with New
Hampshire or New York license plates.

 

The confirmation process for Vermont’s next Secretary of Education progressed on Wednesday as a crucial committee voted in favor of Zoie Saunders’ nomination. The Senate Committee on Education voted three to two in support of Saunders, and her nomination will now proceed to the full Senate. Prior to the committee vote, Governor Phil Scott commended Saunders for her performance during the confirmation hearing, where she addressed inquiries regarding her experience with charter schools. Scott expressed confidence in her suitability for the role based on her responses.

 

Local theaters and arts programs are still struggling post-pandemic, with some facing staff cuts, reduced productions, or permanent closure. Vermont Sen. Peter Welch visited Burlington’s Flynn Theater to introduce the STAGE Act, a bill aimed at providing crucial funds to help theaters and artists boost economic activity in communities. Welch emphasizes the importance of supporting the arts in the recovery from COVID-19, highlighting the economic benefits of investing in this sector. He notes that attendees of performances often patronize local businesses, contributing to the overall local economy.

 

Vermont Route 121 will be closed from Friday at 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15th. The detour will use Back Westminster Road, the I-91 Access Road, and U.S. Route 5. This closure is necessary for the installation of northbound steel girders. On the Interstate, northbound traffic has been redirected to the southbound lane. Southbound traffic is limited to the right-hand lane on I-91 South. The speed limit within the project area is reduced to 55 mph, and fines for speeding in the construction zone are doubled.

 

Vermont’s sole Narcan vending machine Located along Route 15 in Lamoille County, offers free two-pack boxes of naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug. Crystal Bolio, a case manager at Johnson Health Center, emphasizes the importance of easy Narcan access in rural areas. She notes the increasing effects of the opioid crisis and mentions that over 300 boxes of Narcan have been dispensed since the machine’s installation in August, with usage doubling in the past month.

 

The Vermont House has passed a bill that would require firearms made from individual parts, kits, or 3D printers to have serial numbers. This measure aims to address the issue of “ghost guns” increasingly used in crimes. Supporters in the Democratic-controlled Legislature emphasize the importance of keeping these weapons away from individuals not permitted to possess firearms. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a Biden administration appeal on regulating these hard-to-trace “ghost guns.”
