WTSA NEWS FOR THURSDAY APRIL 25th 2024

Amid empty storefronts, Brattleboro ponders the future of downtown. Five years ago, the community celebrated a $30 million arts and apartment block proposal. However, the Covid-19 pandemic halted progress, leaving scars of change in downtown Brattleboro. The closure of iconic establishments like Hotel Pharmacy, Vermont National turned Chittenden, and Sam’s Outdoor Outfitters reflect the challenges faced. Despite this, there is a silver lining as retiring shop owners successfully pass on their businesses, and new investments are being made in the area.

A recent poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire revealed that a majority of Vermonters want Governor Phil Scott and Senator Bernie Sanders to run for reelection. However, both politicians have not yet disclosed their plans for the upcoming election. The poll showed that 58% of respondents want Scott to seek another term as governor, while 30% do not and 12% are undecided. Similarly, 54% of respondents believe Sanders should run for another term in the Senate, while 40% think he should not and 6% are undecided. The poll, which surveyed 924 people between April 18 and April 22, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2%. With Vermont’s filing deadline approaching on May 30, the primary election will take place in August and the general election in November.

A former Police Chief of Leyden MASS was arraigned in Franklin County for charges related to town-owned items being taken. Daniel Galvis pleaded not guilty to larceny and violating conduct standards. Allegedly, he took department equipment and sold some without returning the proceeds. An investigation by the Inspector General’s office began in March 2022 after a complaint on their fraud hotline. Galvis allegedly took a skid steer loader, a motor, a trailer, and a Ford truck between 2018 and 2021. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on June 21.

Upon responding to a foul odor at a Chapman Street apartment in Greenfield MASS on Monday night, authorities discovered an unidentified dead man. Police found the deceased individual inside the apartment, with no one else present. The death is suspected to be a homicide. The former tenant, Taaniel Herberger-Brown, 42, was arrested at an airport in New York on Tuesday as a murder suspect wanted by Massachusetts State Police. Herberger-Brown is currently in custody, with arrangements for his return to Massachusetts pending. Greenfield police are investigating the cause of death and the man’s identity. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is yet to determine the exact cause of death and the deceased man’s identity.

The town’s current solid waste collection contract is ending soon, and the only company interested in taking over has a condition: automation. Assistant Town Manager Patrick Moreland presented this information to Selectboard members on April 16. Moreland mentioned that the use of mechanization could be a deciding factor for the deal. Letters of interest were requested from various firms, including Casella, the company that acquired the town’s previous hauler, Triple T Trucking. Casella was the only company to submit a letter of interest, leading to a meeting on April 8 with Town Manager John Potter, Moreland, and a Casella representative.
