Vermont is set to receive $22 million from FEMA in order to reimburse the state for the actions taken to stabilize state office buildings in the aftermath of the floods that occurred in July. The Public Assistance Grants will cover the expenses incurred for debris removal, as well as the measures implemented to safeguard state buildings in downtown Montpelier from additional harm following the flooding. To date, FEMA has allocated over $36 million in grants to Vermont to reimburse qualified applicants for costs associated with the storms and flooding that took place in July 2023.

Multiple arrests were made after an incident in Barre City on Friday afternoon. Barre City Police Department responded to a fight at an apartment on South Main Street. One man was reported to have a rifle and possibly retreated to the basement, while another group of men were found hiding upstairs. The apartment was evacuated, and nearby schools were advised to hold students for after-school dismissal. Upon searching, Police seized 87.16 grams of cocaine, 22.5 grams of fentanyl, several thousand dollars in cash, a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 style rifle. The men are facing charges related to drug trafficking and possession.

As the weather gets warmer, work zones will increase in the green mountain state. Officials urge drivers to be cautious. According to data from the Agency of Transportation, there were 42 work zone crashes last year, resulting in one fatality. Paul White, the law enforcement liaison, states that road crews in work zones often report speeding, distraction, and impatience. He emphasizes that incidents in work zones can be prevented and urges drivers to pay attention to signs before entering these areas. Vermont state law doubles speeding fines in work zones, making it crucial for drivers to be attentive and aware of the road crew’s work.

Saturday, April 27, is National Drug Take Back Day. The Windham County Prevention Partnership wants to raise awareness about proper prescription medication storage and disposal. This initiative helps prevent drug abuse and theft by getting rid of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Remember, the DEA only accepts pills or patches, not liquids, needles, or sharps. Drop off your medications at various locations: Messenger Valley Pharmacy, Brattleboro Police Department, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Bellows Falls Police Department, Wilmington Police Department, and Dover Police Department. All locations have permanent drop boxes in the lobby for pill disposal during open hours. Call ahead to confirm hours.
