Police in Brattleboro arrested a man for a violent assault that caused serious injuries to the victim. The incident occurred on Main Street on April 11 around 4:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call about a man covered in blood. The victim was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, including a suspected broken nose, brain bleed, and dislocated shoulder. Angel Rosado, 36, was identified as the suspect based on witness accounts and video evidence. Rosado was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, and is being held on $10,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Brattleboro police at 802-257-7946.

 

Gov. Phil Scott’s appointee for Vermont’s new education secretary, Zoie Saunders, faces criticism over her lack of experience in the public school system and her background in charter schools. Despite starting her new job this week, she still has confirmation hearings in the Senate next week, with one-third of senators expressing concern over her appointment. This backlash is uncommon for the governor’s cabinet choices.

 

The Vermont Health Department warns of increasing tick-borne illnesses and advises taking precautions to prevent tick bites outdoors.Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme disease, and are present in Vermont year-round. Precautions include wearing bug spray, long clothes, checking for ticks, showering after being outdoors, and putting clothes in the dryer for 10 minutes to kill any ticks.

 

A driver in Berlin has been issued a criminal citation by the police for allegedly throwing a child from a pick-up truck in the Price Chopper parking lot. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Christian Deforge of Websterville, has been charged with negligent operation. The police department received a tip about the incident on Saturday and conducted an investigation, speaking with witnesses and obtaining surveillance video from the scene. It was observed that the child went back into the truck before it drove away in an unknown direction. After consulting with the States Attorney’s Office, Deforge was cited for the incident. He is scheduled to appear in court in June.

 

Police are asking the public for help identifying a man who broke into
a Derby sports shop and stole multiple guns. Vermont State Police say
just before 11:45 p.m. Monday, a man broke through the front door
of Wright’s Sports Shop on Community Drive with a pry bar and
smashed a shelf holding handguns. He made off with a total of 10
guns, placing them in a reusable grocery bag before leaving. In
surveillance footage, the man can be seen wearing a zip-up hoodie, a
mask on the lower part of his face and muck boots. Anyone with
information is asked to call the state police in Derby at 802-334-8881.

Congratulations to hand-cyclist Alicia Dana of Putney, she won her third Boston Marathon on Monday after posting a blazing 1:15:20 to beat out her 2023 performance by two minutes and 55 seconds. The 55-year-old was trailed by South Burlington’s Edie Perkins and Keeseville’s Devann Murphy.  The three-time Paralympian now turns to the rest of her world cup schedule as she looks to secure a spot on Team USA for the summer games in Paris.
