Two deaths and 318 new covid 19 cases were reported in Vermont Thursday, with 18 new cases in Windham County. In New Hampshire, there were 2 deaths and 609 new cases of the covid virus. One death and 44 new cases were in Cheshire County. In Massachusetts, there were 20 deaths’ and 1,267 new cases of the covid virus, including 7 in Franklin County.

 

 

Vermont State Police say a flagger in a construction zone along route 121 in Grafton was injured when he was struck by a car. The driver, 84-year-old Paul Nobles of Rockingham suffered a medical emergency and went off the road, while the flagger 45-year-old Bobby Jones of Bennington suffered a minor leg injury. Jones refused treatment while Nobles was taken to Grace Cottage Hospital.

Townshend Select board members have made a public statement against acts of hate. The board released a statement in response to an incident reported to them last week. The statement says “The Town of Townshend values all residents and visitors, no matter their backgrounds or identities.  While differences of opinions can be celebrated and debated, we condemn symbols of hate being displayed in our town, in disregard of the welcoming nature of our community as a whole.”

A Bridge project in Rockingham is now complete. The Vermont Agency of transportation made the announcement for the interstate 91 Williams River Bridge replacement on Thursday. Reed and Reed construction was the contractor for the job, and they have begun work on another big job, the replacement of the route 119 Hinsdale Brattleboro Bridges.

The Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday morning approved the nomination of Vermont’s Beth Robinson, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, sending her historic nomination to the Senate Floor for a confirmation vote.  This is the key step in the confirmation process.  The Second Circuit covers Vermont.  Robinson was the first openly gay Vermont Supreme Court justice and, if confirmed, will be the first openly LGBTQ Woman to serve on a U.S. Circuit Court Of Appeals. Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, a leading member and former chair of the Judiciary Committee, had recommended her to President Biden for this 2nd Circuit vacancy and is steering her nomination through the confirmation process.

Green Mountain Power is urging customers to apply today for pandemic relief grants through the Vermont Department of Public Service, as the Vermont COVID-19 Arrearage Assistance Program (VCAAP II) is set to close on Oct. 24. Millions of dollars have been set aside by lawmakers to assist utility customers with overdue balances due to the pandemic, but this program is set to close by the end of the weekend. Residential customers can qualify for up to $10,000 and farms and businesses can qualify for up to $50,000 in relief for arrearages since March 2020. They can use the money to pay past-due landline phone, electric, natural gas and water service bills.
