The Windham Regional Commission and the Windham County Natural Resources Conservation District are improving tactical basin planning efforts for the West, Williams and Saxtons River and other Connecticut River Tributaries. The two organizations will also support overall water quality efforts throughout Windham County. The work is supported through a grant provided by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. Activities began this fall and will extend through September 2020.
The state of Vermont has 94 and a half million dollars in unclaimed property to be returned. Between November and December 10, the Treasurer’s Office returned $413 thousand dollars to more than 16 hundred claoi,455.60 to 1,966 claimants. With the holiday season underway, Vermonters can easily search the State unclaimed property database to claim their funds for holiday shopping, charitable giving, or to save for goals in the new year. Vermont Congressman Peter Welch is co-sponsoring legislation to create a new federal grant program that will assist Vermonters seeking to upgrade their wood stoves to more economical and energy efficient models. Welch says the Wood Heaters Emissions Reduction Act would authorize $75 million annually for six years for a new grant program that provides incentives for households to upgrade old wood stoves for newer, more efficient and cleaner burning stoves. It would also encourage the recycling of old stoves replaced by the project.
The Brattleboro Area Christmas Bird Count Week has started. Between now and midnight on Tuesday, December 17th participants are encouraged to make a note of any bird species observed. Any species recorded during count week but not on count day. Saturday, will be added to the final list as “present.” This is extremely valuable data that can be used to help understand changing bird ranges. The area being observed extends 7.5 miles from the center of Brattleboro, and includes Vernon, Guilford, Dummerston, West Brattleboro, the Sunset Lake Area, Newfane and the New Hampshire area across the Connecticut River between Route 9 and the Hinsdale Setbacks.
New Hampshire’s congressional delegation says rural communities throughout the state will receive $577 thousand dollars in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The money will help fund renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Froling L L C will receive 82 thousand dollars for a project in Keene.
