Are your health care costs going up in 2026? Rep. Becca Balint voted NO on the spending bill that failed to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health care premium tax credits that 20 million Americans rely on to afford health care. Expiration of the ACA’s advanced premium tax credits will lead to millions of Americans seeing their monthly premiums more than double next year. Becca Balint said “I want Vermonters to know I’m in this fight for a health care system that truly serves us. I believe we deserve that, and the fight doesn’t end here.  She also said it’s important for her and her office to understand how Vermonters are going to be affected. Melrose Place is poised for redevelopment into senior housing. “Brattleboro Housing Partnerships is actively exploring collaborative opportunities to address the needs of community residents,” stated Christine Hazzard, the executive director of BHP, during the organization’s annual meeting on Monday. Hazzard revealed that the remaining structures in West Brattleboro, which are now deemed outside the floodway, will be transformed to accommodate 31 new senior households. She indicated that the project is “nearly finalizing all funding, with construction expected to commence in the spring of 2026, and a projected move-in date of spring 2027.”

 

Vermont Works for Women (VWW), in collaboration with the Vermont Women’s Fund and the Vermont Commission on Women, is excited to introduce the Women, Work, and Wages Spotlight Report – an impactful resource for comprehending the economic challenges that women encounter throughout our state. Created in partnership with researchers and community leaders from across Vermont, this spotlight report presents vital, state-specific data sourced from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research’s State Policy Action Lab (State PAL). The report highlights the crucial contribution of women in propelling Vermont’s economy and enhancing our communities.

 

An event focused on part-time and seasonal employment is scheduled to occur at five American Job Centers throughout Vermont this Wednesday, as announced by the state’s Department of Labor. In our region, the “Work Your Way” Job Fair Series will be held at the Springfield Job Center, located at 56 Main Street, #101, Springfield, Vt. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore job openings within the state and engage with local employers during this event, which is set to take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at all participating locations. Attendance at these fairs is complimentary, and while registration online is available for those interested, it is not mandatory.

 

And up in Royalton, a Texas man is due in court after police said he intentionally damaged a mail carrier windshield. Vermont State Police said they were called to the Crossroads Bar and Grill in Royalton early Sunday morning for a report of a disturbance. When troopers arrived, witnesses told them that Justin Gomez, 35, was acting in a disorderly manner and had thrown a cinder block through the windshield of a mail carrier. Gomez was ultimately cited on charges of aggravated disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief. He is due in court in January to answer the charges.

 

“Turn it Up!”, the well-known independent music and video store, is being sold to a long-time employee, Carson Arnold, by its founders, Patrick Pezzati and Chandra Hancock. The Brattleboro store is located at 85 Main Street.  Carson Arnold, who has been an employee for 21 years, is purchasing the store’s locations in Brattleboro, VT, Northampton, MA, and the weekend-only location in Montague, MA, Arnold is set to officially take over on November 24th.
