Attorney General Charity Clark, along with 22 other attorneys general and three governors, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Secretary Brooke Rollins for unlawfully suspending the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program assists over 40 million Americans in purchasing food and has been affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown. The coalition contends that the suspension of SNAP benefits is illegal and arbitrary under the Administrative Procedure Act. They plan to file a temporary restraining order yesterday to seek the immediate restoration of SNAP benefits. Vermont Governor Phil Scott was anticipated to approve an extra $13 million for food benefits later this week, which would provide temporary funding for the program. However, in a statement released on Monday, the governor indicated that he is also collaborating with Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark to investigate potential legal action.

The Vermont Department of Health has announced that there has been a slight decrease in COVID-19 hospitalizations following a recent rise in cases that started in August. Other metrics, such as wastewater virus levels and outbreaks, have also shown a decline. Neither the VDH nor the CDC is currently providing updates on COVID fatalities or total cases in Vermont or across the United States. WastewaterSCAN testing of treatment facilities suggests that both COVID-19 and Norovirus levels in Vermont have recently been higher than the national averages.
