On the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, called on Republicans to come to the table and negotiate in good faith with Democrats to reopen the government and rescue hardworking Americans who rely on Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits to afford their health care. In his remarks, Senator Welch emphasized the urgency of extending the ACA subsidies, which help nearly 27,000 low- and moderate-income Vermonters access health coverage through the ACA marketplace.
Governor Phil Scott and the Agency of Commerce and Community Development announced at yesterday’s press conference just over $3.3 million in funding for 34 rehabilitation and revitalization projects in 23 of Vermont’s designated downtown and village centers. These Downtown and Village Center Tax Credit Program awards will generate nearly $70 million in building improvements and public infrastructure around the state. In addition to supporting investments for small businesses and important community centers, funding this year will help to create or rehabilitate nearly 70 units of housing within existing underutilized and vacant buildings.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today warned that the Republican plan to eliminate subsidies for Affordable Care Act coverage will cause massive health insurance premium hikes for tens of thousands of Vermonters. According to new data released today by the Vermont Health Connect exchange, if subsidies are not extended, Vermonters could face devastating premium increases starting in January.
