In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day today, October 13th, all Brattleboro town offices and the Brooks Memorial Library will be closed. Emergency services will continue to operate, and parking will be free at meters and in pay-and-display lots. The VTrans paving project continues on Tuesday on U.S. Route 5 (Main Street) and Vermont Route 9 (Western Avenue and High Street). Nighttime single-lane closures will resume Tuesday, October 14th. There is no change to the trash, recycling, and composting pickup schedule in Brattleboro. Collections will run on their regular schedule for the week. Curbside pickup would not be affected.

A teenager lost her life in a collision after fleeing from a trooper who was attempting to stop her, according to the Vermont State Police. VSP reports that at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, one of their troopers attempted to pull over a vehicle that was exceeding the speed limit on Vermont Route 105, just west of Colton Road in the town of Sheldon. Authorities state that instead of complying, the driver accelerated away, prompting the trooper to cease the pursuit. Roughly two minutes later, the trooper allegedly encountered the scene of an accident involving that vehicle. Investigators indicate that after evading the trooper, the car veered onto the shoulder of the road, then crossed both lanes and collided with a pickup truck. Police confirm that the driver of the car, Aryanna Flemming, 18, from Enosburgh, was fatally injured. The driver of the pickup truck, Andrea Dillner, 36, from Fletcher, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

A 2-year-old girl who went missing for several hours in a New Hampshire town was located by a volunteer and his dog. New Hampshire Fish and Game reported that after 4 p.m. on Friday, they, along with New Hampshire State Police, received a report regarding the missing child in Dorchester. At the time of the report, the girl had been missing for over 45 minutes, according to authorities. The toddler and two dogs had been playing in a fenced front yard, but either the dogs or the child managed to open the fence, as stated by Fish and Game. Approximately 100 volunteers participated in the search for the girl, with Jeremy Corson and his K-9, Freya, from New England K-9 Search and Rescue, ultimately finding her. Fish and Game confirmed that the girl was unharmed and was transported to a waiting ambulance before being taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for evaluation.

As the cold weather sets in, some Granite Staters may have activated their heating systems for the first time this season. Officials are advising everyone to ensure their heating systems are functioning properly. New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey emphasizes the importance of maintaining and cleaning heating systems to prevent carbon monoxide from entering homes, whether from oil, gas, or wood stoves. Carbon monoxide can be emitted if these systems are not vented correctly, posing a risk since it is odorless and tasteless. Toomey recommends installing a carbon monoxide alarm, and if it sounds, to immediately call 911 and evacuate the premises.

On Sunday, October 12, the Putney School celebrated its 90th Harvest Festival, an annual tradition featuring farm and craft booths, live music, and other activities. The free, day-long event also included a parade, games, and a performance by the school orchestra.
