In the early hours of October 1st, the U.S. government entered a partial shutdown after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a funding deal. The shutdown will affect more than 3,300 federal employees in Vermont. “Essential” services like the U.S. Postal Service will continue, but “non-essential” functions will see closures or reduced staffing.

 

The Vermont General Fund revenue for August was $11 million, or 7%, below its monthly target, largely due to underperformance in personal income tax receipts. However, officials stated the year-to-date revenue remains positive.

 

Button Up Vermont campaign kicks off with the annual campaign launched October 1st to urge Vermonters to prepare their homes for colder weather. Organizers highlighted that while state weatherization rebates will continue, federal home energy tax credits for projects like insulation, windows, and new heating systems are set to expire at the end of the year.

 

Davona Williams, a mother of three from Manchester, has received a $7,500 bond from an immigration judge following her detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which ignited significant community protests. After a virtual hearing on September 30, the judge determined that Williams was neither a flight risk nor a threat to the community. Originally from Jamaica, Williams was apprehended on August 25 due to a 2013 removal order, despite her clean criminal record and ongoing efforts to obtain legal residency. As fundraising initiatives are in progress to cover the bond and travel expenses, Williams is anticipated to return to Vermont shortly to reunite with her family. Her legal team will persist in exploring options to secure a permanent legal solution and avert her deportation.

 

A three-day graffiti and hip-hop culture festival is set to begin during the First-Friday Gallery Walk on October 3rd. Organized by the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and Juniper Creative Arts, the event will feature local and international graffiti artists creating murals on Arch Street, alongside interactive art, DJs, and a block party.
