WTSA NEWS FOR TUESDAY AUGUST 26th 2025

The Town of Brattleboro is lifting the burn ban effective immediately due to improved weather conditions.

This decision follows a time of heightened fire risk caused by dry weather. With recent rainfall and lower fire danger levels, residents may now resume open burning activities in line with local regulations.

We urge all residents to remain cautious while burning and adhere to all safety guidelines, which include:

  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Keep water or fire suppression tools nearby.
  • Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

The Town of Brattleboro and the Brattleboro Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary. We appreciate the community’s cooperation during the burn ban and thank you for helping to keep Brattleboro safe.

A lawmaker from Morristown urged state health care regulators last week to prevent or postpone the closure of Copley Hospital’s birthing center until further evaluation could be conducted. Copley, among the smallest critical access hospitals in the state, was the last to submit its annual budget plans to the board. A team of administrators, including CEO Joe Woodin and Kathy Demars, vice chair of the hospital’s board of trustees, explained the controversial decision to close the birthing center and sought the board’s support. Woodin shared data from a consultant’s analysis linking a declining birthrate to the costs of operating the birthing center, which ultimately influenced most trustees to vote for its closure by Nov. 1. Copley’s analysis presented to the Green Mountain Care Board indicated that continuing operations of the birthing center would lead to a $3.7 million loss for the hospital, based on 2023 data. The analysis also suggested that the hospital could achieve a $2.9 million gain by offering only pre- and post-natal care.

On Wednesday, August 27th at 5:30 PM, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) will conduct a Listening Session with community members to discuss the negative impact of President Trump’s health care policies on Vermonters. This event will take place at the College Hall Chapel Room (2nd Floor)—Greenway Institute campus, 36 College Street, Montpelier, VT. Vermont officials project that approximately 45,000 Vermonters may lose their health coverage in the upcoming years due to these policies. The Republicans’ so-called ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ is set to reduce Medicaid funding by over $1 trillion over the next decade, complicating the financial stability of rural hospitals and other providers. Senator Welch strongly opposed this legislation in July.

On August 24, 2025, at around 11:24PM, the Vermont State Police noticed a vehicle heading north on Interstate 89 near mile marker 83.6 in Williston, exceeding the posted speed limit of 65 miles per hour. LIDAR confirmed the speed at 105 miles per hour. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver was identified as Tara Panditi (38) from Plattsburgh, NY. The vehicle contained two passengers, including a young child in the back seat, which posed a significant risk due to the high speed. Panditi received a citation to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court for charges of Negligent Operation and Reckless Endangerment. Additionally, she was issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for Title 23 Section 1004 – Interstate Speed, which incurs a penalty of 2 points and a waiver fee of $599.

In observance of Labor Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, with the exception of emergency services. Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Monday, September 1. All other violations will be enforced. Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Monday, September 1.
