WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY AUGUST 25th 2025

A former police officer from Hinsdale, N.H., and a deputy sheriff from Windham County were involved in an officer-involved shooting on Thursday night in Springfield, Vt. Vermont State Police identified James Crary, 36, from Newport, N.H., as the individual killed by police. According to a press release, officers from the Springfield Police Department and the Windsor County Sheriff’s Department responded to 78 Valley St. shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation. Upon arrival, they found Crary in a vehicle outside the residence. Crary then accelerated towards the officers, who were positioned outside their vehicles. Subsequently, a Springfield police officer and a Windsor County sheriff’s deputy discharged their department-issued firearms. Crary was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. The State Police took over the investigation, as is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Vermont. VSP is currently processing the shooting scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing evidence, including footage from cruiser-mounted and body-worn cameras. An autopsy conducted on Saturday at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington revealed that Crary died from gunshot wounds to the head, with the manner of death classified as homicide.

Activists urged Brattleboro Memorial Hospital to retain its staff as the institution grapples with significant financial challenges. The Reformer reports, “Amid dark rumors of drastic changes — including potential outsourcing of essential services and cuts to direct patient care — the residents of Brattleboro and surrounding areas stand united in support of the hospital’s exceptional employees and the high-quality care they provide,” according to an announcement. “In a state with one of the nation’s oldest populations — and Brattleboro among its most aging demographics — BMH stands out as a model of genuine empathy and expertise in a health care system that often prioritizes profits over people.” Recently, six administrative positions were eliminated due to a $4 million shortfall faced by the hospital. They hope to prevent service cuts or further staffing reductions as the U.S. health care landscape undergoes changes. Particularly worrisome is the reform of Medicaid and Medicare through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, advocated by President Trump. Additionally, tariffs and pharmaceutical costs are significant concerns. BMH aims to maintain its independence and is engaging in programs and seeking solutions to enhance stability.

A week prior to the start of school, bus drivers were locked out from their garage on Putney Road. They protested with signs, urging the bus company to “return to negotiations.” A spokesperson for Travel Kuz stated on Wednesday, “This morning, we initiated a temporary lockout at our Brattleboro site after union negotiations failed to yield an agreement. This lockout will not impact student transportation. Routes will proceed as planned, and we are collaborating with the school district to ensure families face no disruptions at the start of the school year. Our top priority is the safety of students and the dependability of school transportation.” Teamsters Local 597 President Curtis Clough remarked that Beacon Mobility, owned by F.M. Kuzmeskus/Travel Kuz, had sent emails last week expressing a desire to negotiate this week. He accused the company of compelling drivers to accept a “substandard contract” as talks collapsed. “Beacon Mobility is already outsourcing a considerable amount of work from Windham Southeast Supervisory Union due to a lack of drivers, which is a result of their non-competitive wages,” he stated.

The 20-year-old driver, who suffered severe injuries in a crash nearly two weeks ago, has passed away. He was hospitalized with critical injuries and remained there until his death 12 days later.
