WTSA NEWS FOR TUESDAY AUGUST 19th 2025

A head-on collision involving three vehicles, including a motorcycle, closed a section of Route 9 West on Sunday morning, resulting in seven individuals being hospitalized. The Keene Fire Department reported that the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the Westmoreland town line. Emergency crews arrived shortly after and discovered two severely damaged passenger vehicles and a motorcycle. One individual was trapped in a car and required specialized rescue equipment for extraction. Due to the number of injuries, officials classified the situation as a Level 1 mass casualty incident, which led to the deployment of additional ambulances and rescue units from Spofford, Cheshire County, and Rescue Inc. A DHART medical helicopter was also summoned to transport one critically injured patient to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. In total, four patients were taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, two to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Vermont, and one by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock. Authorities confirmed that all victims were conscious and breathing at the scene.

A 22-year-old man from Brattleboro has been cited by police for making two false emergency reports that caused disruption at a fast-food restaurant earlier this year. According to investigators, on March 28, two threatening calls were received: one reported a bomb at the McDonald’s on Putney Road, and the other, made approximately 35 minutes later, claimed there was a hostage situation at the same restaurant. Both reports were found to be hoaxes, as stated in a news release. After the investigation, police cited Kyle J. Rice on Friday for making false alarms to public safety agencies.

Sen. Bernie Sanders engaged with older Vermonters regarding their concerns about the nation’s state on Sunday. Upon his arrival at the Hotel Champlain for a discussion, he received a standing ovation from the attendees. “We need to discuss the current situation in our country, and there is certainly much to address,” stated Sanders, I-Vermont. Guests enjoyed a meal, music, and socializing prior to the discussion. The senator spoke briefly at the outset before inviting fellow Vermonters to ask questions and share their experiences. The audience raised various topics, including Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, and artificial intelligence.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office has initiated an investigation into a “suspicious death” in Canaan, New Hampshire. Attorney General John Formella stated that the Canaan Police Department responded to a residence on Sawyer Hill around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday to check on the occupant’s welfare. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the resident, William Colao, deceased. Formella indicated that Colao seemed to have sustained a stab wound. An autopsy is set to occur later today at the chief medical examiner’s office in Concord.

On Saturday, shortly after 11am, Vermont State Police conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 91 Southbound near mile marker 33.4 in Rockingham due to a motor vehicle violation. While interacting with the driver, Robert Bariteau (57) from Ryegate, VT, troopers noticed signs of impairment. The investigation confirmed that Bariteau was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to the Westminster Barracks for processing. During this process, Bariteau deliberately damaged a Vermont State Police Cruiser, resulting in property damage. He was later released with a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division on September 9th to face charges of DUI and Unlawful Mischief.
