Vermont State Police are searching for a man accused of stealing a car, crashing into a police cruiser, and fleeing the scene. This incident occurred Saturday morning when a Vermont state trooper observed a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado speeding on Rte 22 in Fair Haven. After attempting to pull the vehicle over, the driver attempted to escape. While making a turn onto the exit 2 westbound on-ramp, a collision occurred between the driver and the trooper. The driver subsequently fled the scene. Authorities later discovered that the Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen from a residence in Shaftsbury. State police report that the investigation is still ongoing.
A New York man was apprehended early Sunday after allegedly driving nearly 20 miles in the wrong direction on the interstate. Vermont State Police in Royalton received a report around 2 a.m. about a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-89, nearly resulting in a head-on collision. Officers located the vehicle and stopped it near exit three in Royalton. The driver, 58-year-old Dezhong Jiang from Flushing, N.Y., had been driving incorrectly for approximately 20 miles. Jiang has been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court in September.
In what Governor Phil Scott referred to as “a small but significant step,” Vermont announced on Friday the launch of a website designed to consolidate information for new business owners in one location. The Vermont Business Portal, accessible at business.vermont.gov, offers details on tax filing, permit applications, and funding access. A key feature of the site is the “new business checklist,” which the state claims will enable aspiring entrepreneurs to outline each step of the process in approximately ten minutes. Vermont’s Agency of Digital Services noted that organizing documents and services from various government departments can be daunting for new business owners. “The Vermont Business Portal offers a pathway to each of those entities, simplifying the navigation of state government.”
New data from Toast indicates that New Hampshire ranks as the third most generous state for tipping. According to the report, diners in New Hampshire left an average tip of 20.9% in the first quarter of the year. Only two states surpassed this average, with Delaware leading at 22.1% and West Virginia at 21%. California had the lowest average tipping percentage at 17.3%, as reported by Axios. On July 4, President Donald Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” into law. This legislation mandates that the U.S. Treasury Department publish a list by October 2 of occupations eligible for tax-free tips. Workers earning less than $150,000, or $300,000 if married and filing jointly, can deduct up to $25,000 in tips from their taxable income.
A cherished local landmark, the renowned Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, MA, has reopened to the public. The bridge was closed in October 2023 for a comprehensive restoration project costing $3,198,000, which involved new railings, lighting, an updated pathway, enhancements to the existing vibrant plantings, and the essential water line supplying potable water to Buckland residents. Pedestrians can now enjoy walking across the bridge from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for August 18th at 2 p.m., near Buckland Town Hall.
