A contentious logging strategy has been completed and is proceeding to implementation. The U.S. Forest Service has finalized its approach to manage 72,000 acres of land in the Green Mountains, referred to as the Telephone Gap. The agency intends to open 11,000 acres for timber harvesting. Opponents argue that this will result in excessive carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The plan is now active and may affect 20-30 towns across several counties.
The Vermont Health Department advises individuals planning to visit Vermont lakes or ponds for a refreshing experience this summer to check for cyanobacteria blooms prior to entering the water. Health officials indicate that cyanobacteria, commonly referred to as blue-green algae, can proliferate rapidly, resulting in surface scums and dense concentrations known as blooms, particularly during the warm days of late summer and early fall. These blooms can cause the water to take on a dark green hue, resembling pea soup or spilled paint. Additionally, they note that blooms may also manifest in colors such as white, brown, red, or purple.
