Remaining in Vermont post-college graduation may enable students to save significant amounts on loan repayments. The Green Mountain Job and Retention Program will soon begin accepting applications. This program provides Vermont college graduates with $5,000 in loan relief, contingent upon their residence and employment in Vermont after graduation. Its objective is to retain young individuals in the state and enhance the workforce. This grant is being introduced as the Trump administration rolls back Biden-era student loan forgiveness policies. Last year, 240 students benefited from this grant. Applications will be available starting in early July.

Attorneys representing numerous individuals who allege abuse at New Hampshire’s youth detention center initiated a class action lawsuit on Friday. They aim to stop the replacement of the independent administrator of the state’s settlement fund for victims with a political appointee. The settlement fund was established by lawmakers in 2022, marketed as a “victim-centered” and “trauma-informed” alternative to litigation, managed by a neutral administrator appointed by the state Supreme Court. However, the Republican-led Legislature altered this process through last-minute changes to the state budget, which were approved on Thursday and signed into law by Gov. Kelly Ayotte on Friday. According to the new provisions effective July 1, the governor will gain the power to appoint and dismiss the fund’s administrator, while the attorney general—also a political appointee—will possess veto authority over settlement awards.

A man from Winchester was hospitalized on Sunday evening following a trail bike accident behind a residence on Elm Street, as reported by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Jacob Rogers, 32, was riding a registered off-highway recreational vehicle (OHRV) at approximately 8:15 p.m. on June 29 when he lost control while accelerating in soft dirt and crashed. Officials from Fish and Game indicated that Rogers suffered a serious injury to his lower leg and was assisted back to the residence using an ATV. About 45 minutes later, a 911 call was made, and Winchester EMS transported him to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene. A New Hampshire Conservation Officer arrived at the scene to interview witnesses and later followed up with Rogers at the hospital. The department’s report stated that Rogers received a violation summons for operating an OHRV while his driver’s license was suspended.
