WTSA NEWS FOR FRIDAY JUNE 27th 2025

A 41-year-old woman, Kalah Gharouni, was arrested on several charges, including petit larceny and providing false information to law enforcement. She was taken into custody at a residence on South Pine Banks Road after an investigation by deputies from the Windham County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies Thomas Raymond and Jacob Cohen had been following leads in various ongoing cases in Windham County. Through their thorough investigation, they identified Gharouni as the suspect in these cases. Additionally, Gharouni had an active arrest warrant in the state. She was taken to the Windham County Sheriff’s Office for processing and subsequently transported to the Southern State Correctional Facility, where she is being held on a $200 bail. The charges against her include petit larceny, providing false information to a law enforcement officer, and being arrested on an in-state warrant.

Law enforcement agencies initiated a new safety program along Route 9 on Sunday, issuing numerous tickets during an eight-hour enforcement operation aimed at reducing dangerous driving. As part of the launch of the Safe Commute Corridors initiative, New Hampshire State Police collaborated with officers from the Keene and Chesterfield police departments to address violations along the heavily trafficked section of Route 9 between Stoddard and the Vermont border. The coordinated patrol took place from noon to 8 p.m., resulting in 95 vehicle stops and 48 tickets issued, as reported by state police. Among the most significant violations was a juvenile driver from Brattleboro, Vermont, who was recorded traveling eastbound through Chesterfield at over 100 miles per hour in a red Dodge minivan. State Police indicated that Trooper Jonathan DeLisle first observed the speeding vehicle, which was ultimately stopped by a Keene police officer.

Green Up Vermont says despite a dip in volunteers this year, Green Up Day was a success. They say volunteerism dropped 19% from 2024, but they believe the surge last year was due to a world record attempt for most people picking up waste. This year, 6% more trash was picked up than last year. The total came to 426.7 tons. Organizers hope to continue to build upon the success of Green Up Day and expand on ways to continue to care for the environment.

A decline in Canadian tourism is affecting Vermont State Parks. A month into the season, foot traffic at Grand Isle State Park has shown mixed results. Vermont State Parks reports a 45% decrease in Canadian campers statewide. Officials attribute this drop to political tensions and policies. Typically, the parks generate around $77 million annually, with Canadian visitors accounting for 10% of campers. If this trend continues throughout the season, the state could lose nearly $4 million. Parks near the border, such as Lake Carmi, Sand Bar, Alburgh Dunes, and Grand Isle, host the highest number of Canadian campers and would experience the most significant losses.

Governor Phil Scott has enacted a tax relief package designed to assist many young families, seniors, and military veterans. With his signature on Wednesday, 31,500 residents of Vermont will benefit from tax relief, including nearly 4,000 veterans such as retired Army Master Sgt. Christopher Cunningham. After serving for 22 years and completing multiple tours in Afghanistan, Cunningham returned to Vermont. He stated, “Whatever I have to do so my kids can grow up in Vermont like me.” Despite his peers advising against retiring in Vermont due to the state’s tax on military pensions, he is now hopeful as the tax relief bill proposes to exempt military retirement for households earning up to $125,000. Additionally, it offers a $250 tax credit to low-income veterans and fully exempts benefits provided to families following the death of a service member.

A 61-year-old man from Claremont, New Hampshire, was arrested on June 20 for breaching his court-ordered release conditions. Roger Colby Sr. was taken into custody following a traffic stop by deputies from the Windham County Sheriff’s Office on Alice Holway Drive. The stop was initiated due to multiple observed motor vehicle violations. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that Colby was driving the vehicle and was indeed violating his court-ordered conditions. He was arrested and taken to the Windham County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Colby was subsequently released on a citation to appear in the Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division, on August 19th.
