WTSA NEWS FOR FRIDAY MAY 23rd 2025

Vermont Senator Peter Welch has put forth a resolution acknowledging the collaboration between the United States and Canada. Welch emphasizes that the two countries share the longest border in the world, with approximately 400,000 individuals and $2.5 billion worth of goods crossing it daily. In the previous year, Canada represented 35 percent of Vermont’s exports, 67 percent of its imports, and 56 percent of its overall trade.

A new law in Vermont seeks to enhance protections for immigrants. On Wednesday, Governor Phil Scott enacted a bill mandating that law enforcement agencies obtain his consent prior to entering into specific immigration agreements. According to the ACLU, this legislation closes a loophole that previously permitted local law enforcement to form collaborative agreements with federal immigration authorities without the governor’s authorization during a declared state or federal emergency. The organization stated that this is “another significant advancement in establishing the state’s firewall against federal overreach.”

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has once more endorsed a bill aimed at providing tuition-free education at public colleges and universities. The College for All Act would ensure that all students can attend community college without tuition fees and enable households within specific income thresholds to pursue college education without incurring debt. Additionally, it proposes to double the maximum Pell Grant awards for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, among other provisions. Notably, there were no Republican co-sponsors for this bill.

The Vermont Chamber of Commerce has revealed its new Citizen of the Year. Maj. Gen. Gregory Knight, commander of the Vermont National Guard, has been chosen for this honor due to his significant contributions to the safety, economy, and military preparedness of the Green Mountain State. According to the chamber, his exemplary and altruistic leadership enhances both the Guard and the state of Vermont.

Governor Phil Scott has indicated his readiness to veto a proposed charter amendment that would prohibit firearms in Burlington bars. Although he has voiced concerns regarding the bill in recent months, Wednesday was the first occasion he explicitly mentioned the possibility of vetoing the amendment. Scott expressed his discontent with the inconsistency of gun laws across different towns and questioned the feasibility of enforcing the ban. On Town Meeting Day, nearly 90% of Burlington voters supported the charter amendment, which the city believes would enhance safety in the downtown area. However, the charter amendment must still receive approval from the full House before it can be presented to Scott for his decision.

Motorists traveling on Interstate 91 for Memorial Day weekend should be vigilant for more than just the correct exit. Three weeks prior, numerous protesters assembled in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to voice their opposition to the Trump administration’s policies, continuing the trend of “overpass protests” that gained momentum earlier this year. This Friday, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., local groups associated with the Indivisible Project intend to take to the streets once more. The organizing groups include Defend Democracy Indivisible, Brattleboro Indivisible, and Rise Up Western Mass Indivisible. Protests are scheduled at I-91 overpasses as far north as U.S. Route 302 (Exit 17) in Newbury, along with at least six overpasses in Brattleboro and Putney in Windham County.
