WTSA NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 14th 2025

Vermont health insurance providers are requesting state regulators to approve another round of significant rate increases due to financial concerns. The Green Mountain Care Board indicates that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont customers may face a 23.3 percent increase, while small groups could see a rise of nearly 14 percent. MVP customers might experience a 6.2 percent increase, with small groups facing a 7.5 percent hike. These requests follow last year’s similar increases deemed necessary to address escalating healthcare costs.

Fifteen states are suing President Trump for expediting energy projects, claiming the administration is violating environmental laws and endangering species and cultural resources. On his first day in office, Trump declared a ‘national energy emergency’ to promote oil and gas expansion using eminent domain and the Defense Production Act, which permits the government to utilize private land for national necessities. Such measures are intended for genuine emergencies, like those following natural disasters, according to the lawsuit filed in Washington state.

Senator Peter Welch of Vermont asserts that the recent Republican tax bill would remove millions from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The proposed modifications would tighten work requirements, restrict future program expansions, and increase state financial burdens. Hunger Free Vermont reports that currently, two out of five Vermonters face food insecurity. The USDA indicates that over 67,000 Vermonters received SNAP benefits in 2022. This proposal arises as Republicans aim for at least $1.5 trillion in savings to offset the costs of maintaining the expiring 2017 tax breaks.

On Monday at 9:45 AM, Vermont State Police received several 911 calls about a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 5 in Dummerston. The driver, Christal C. Cassell (41), showed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and negligent operation. She received a citation to appear in Windham County Superior Court on July 8 for D.U.I. Drug and Negligent Operation charges.

A Townshend man was arrested on Sunday evening for allegedly driving nearly double the speed limit on VT Route 30. John R. Faulkner, 24, faces charges of negligent operation and excessive speed after being clocked at 95 mph in a 50 mph zone near Browns Road at around 6:20 p.m. The Windham County Sheriff’s Office reported that Faulkner was seen overtaking other vehicles. Sgt. Norton has scheduled a court appearance for Faulkner in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division, on June 17, and he received a traffic ticket for the speeding violation.
