A Vermont man who police say attacked two people faces charges including
attempted murder. Investigators say on Thursday night, Edward Dever, 59, of
Morristown, stabbed one person and choked another, and then took off. He
was found and arrested around 11 p.m. on Interstate 91 in Putney. Dever was
held without bail and was in court on Friday to answer to charges including
attempted murder and aggravated assault.
A Guilford man was arrested Thursday morning after a traffic stop on Coolidge
Highway revealed multiple violations, including driving under the influence.
James Smith, 31, was stopped by a Vermont State Police trooper from the
Westminster Barracks at approximately 9:47 a.m. after the officer observed a
motor vehicle violation. During the investigation, the trooper determined Smith
was driving with a criminally suspended license and was under the influence of
alcohol. Smith was also found to be in violation of active court-ordered
conditions of release. Additionally, Smith did not have a required ignition
interlock device installed in his vehicle. Smith was placed under arrest and
transported to the Westminster Barracks for processing. He was issued a
criminal citation to appear before the Windham County Superior Court on May
20th .
A former childcare provider convicted of providing a fatal dose of medicine to a
6-month-old will stay in prison. Stacey Vaillancourt was sentenced to 3-10 years
in prison last year after a jury found her guilty of manslaughter and child cruelty
in the death of Harper Rose Briar. Vaillancourt’s lawyers appealed, arguing the
state’s evidence had significant gaps, and that some of it was unfair and
emotionally charged. But Friday, the Vermont Supreme Court denied her
appeal, saying there was sufficient evidence to convict her and there were no
issues with the evidence or the verdicts.
A Green Up cleanup takes place across Vermont this weekend. The statewide
spring cleanup targets trash with the help of thousands of volunteers. Former
Gov. Deane Davis started the tradition in 1970, urging communities to clean up
litter and garbage from sidewalks, roads and waterways. There are many
locations to pick up your Green Up bags in Brattleboro, including Brattleboro
Subaru, the Brattleboro Food Co-Op & the West Brattleboro Fire Station.
The Vermont State Police will offer pop-up tests for potential new recruits in
Caledonia and Rutland counties this weekend. Anyone interested in becoming a
state trooper can take a physical fitness test and ask questions about the career.
No appointment or application is needed. The tests include running and rowing.
You can put yourself to the test at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Fairhaven Union High
School and St. Johnsbury Academy. The next Vermont Police Academy class
starts July 14. State police have also added a new hiring incentive to attract
recruits. Troopers are now eligible for $10,000 in tuition reimbursement.
Walleye fishing season opens in Vermont on Saturday. Lakes and rivers across
the state, from Lake Champlain to Island Pond, have walleye populations. The
state says there is no open season on the walleye’s cousin, the sauger. If you
catch one, immediately let it go. You do need a fishing license to fish in
Vermont.
