How are Vermonters managing their nicotine consumption? The Health Department’s Annual Tobacco Control Report indicates a decline in adult smoking, yet an increase in youth vaping, attributed to flavored tobacco. State data reveals that 16% of high school students vape, with half using it over 20 days each month. Rhonda Williams, program director at the Vermont Health Department, noted that current vape products lack nicotine level regulations, potentially leading to higher addiction rates. The 802 Quits program provides financial incentives for low-income Vermonters seeking treatment.

Since 2003, mothers in Vermont prisons have had access to a comfortable visiting area to connect with their children at no cost, thanks to a collaboration between the state and a nonprofit. However, similar services for incarcerated fathers have not been available. With 64% of the state’s prison population being parents, lawmakers are now considering bill H. 219, which aims to establish such a program at Northwestern State Correctional Facility in Newport. This initiative would allow fathers to virtually attend family court hearings, make regular phone calls to their children, and visit them in a welcoming, child-friendly environment.
