WTSA NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY MARCH 19th 2025

On Tuesday, advocates urged Vermont lawmakers to combat cancer by supporting a bill that enhances insurance coverage for biomarker testing. This testing enables more accurate cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Organizers estimate that nearly 4,700 Vermonters will receive a cancer diagnosis this year, with approximately 1,500 expected to succumb to the disease.

On Tuesday, Vermont’s attorney general outlined her legal challenges against the Trump administration, addressing issues such as immigration and federal funding. Since President Trump’s inauguration, Vermont has contested six of his executive orders, including efforts to eliminate birthright citizenship, halt federal funding and NIH grants, and implement mass federal layoffs. Attorney General Charity Clark has also criticized the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk, filing lawsuits to prevent his access to the Treasury Department and deeming the power delegation to him unlawful. Clark noted that many Vermonters have urged the state to respond since Trump’s presidency began.

During a traffic stop in Royalton last Thursday at approximately 10:15 p.m., police discovered a pipe bomb while arresting 30-year-old Zamir Paley on Route 14. Authorities reported that Paley had outstanding warrants, and upon searching his vehicle, they found the explosive device, prompting the involvement of the FBI and bomb squad. Paley faces multiple charges and is currently in custody, as indicated by Vermont’s inmate tracker.

The trial of former Vermont State Police trooper Giancarlo DiGenova concluded in a mistrial on Monday, the same day it commenced in a Barre courtroom. DiGenova faced allegations of stealing evidence from the barracks, including $324 in cash, a knife, a cell phone, and a charger. As proceedings began, the jury listened to opening statements before the state presented witnesses who discussed evidence storage procedures at the Vermont State Police Berlin barracks. The prosecution displayed surveillance footage from October 15, 2022, showing DiGenova entering the barracks with personal items and later exiting with those items plus a brown paper bag. The defense did not present any witnesses, and closing arguments began on Monday afternoon.

A Keene man, Miles Maloney, 36, was arrested for driving under the influence early Monday after crashing his car into the Rent-A-Center on Key Road, causing significant damage. According to Keene police Lt. Benjamin Nugent Maloney was traveling west on Route 9 around 4:30 a.m. when he veered off the road, hit a raised sewer drain, and collided with the store.

Attorney General John M. Formella, Transportation Commissioner William J. Cass, and Division of Motor Vehicles Director John Marasco are alerting New Hampshire residents to a new scam aimed at E-ZPass users. This scam falsely claims that unpaid tolls will be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), pressuring individuals to make quick payments. Victims receive a text message that seems to be from “E-ZPass,” stating that their vehicle has an “unpaid toll bill.” The message includes a payment link and warns that failure to pay within 12 hours will result in late fees and a report to the DMV, which could impact vehicle registration.

Attorney General Formella advises, “Residents should be cautious of unsolicited text messages requesting payment. If you receive such a message, treat it as a scam, do not respond, and avoid clicking any links.” Commissioner Cass adds, “NH E-ZPass will never send texts asking for toll payments or late fees. Always verify your account through the official NH E-ZPass website or app.” Director Marasco emphasizes that the DMV notifies customers of any toll payment defaults via USPS mail, not text messages. He encourages residents to remain vigilant against scams and to contact Customer Service at (603) 227-4000 for any registration inquiries. For secure account access, visit the official NH E-ZPass website at www.ezpassnh.com.

The NH E-ZPass application can be downloaded from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. If you believe you have fallen victim to this scam or have any concerns, you may report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, which is dedicated to monitoring online fraud. For inquiries or to report a scam, please reach out to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-888-468-4454. Additional information can be found on the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Bureau website.
