A Marlboro man has been arrested following an investigation into allegations of sexual assault against a minor. Vermont State Police detectives began their inquiry in November 2024 after reports of inappropriate conduct by 52-year-old Jorge Romo. He faces charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child Under 13 and two counts of Lewd and Lascivious Conduct with a Child. Romo is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windsor Criminal Division, today at 12:30 p.m. He is not in custody but is subject to a $50,000 appearance bond.
On Saturday afternoon, hundreds protested outside the Tesla dealership in South Burlington. The volunteer organizer expressed concerns regarding Elon Musk’s role in the federal government and his actions since being appointed to DOGE. “We must demonstrate our outrage; this situation is unacceptable. Tesla is a visible target for our protest,” stated Lynn Vera from South Burlington. The organizer noted that this demonstration aligned with national protests against Tesla dealerships, with expectations for more local events to follow.
On Thursday, the Vermont House of Representatives cast a decisive vote to prohibit the use of hazardous perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in dental floss, cleaning agents, and fluorine-treated containers. This significant measure aims to diminish the exposure of Vermont residents to these detrimental chemicals. The Vermont Department of Health has indicated that exposure to PFAS can result in various health issues, including reproductive and developmental disorders, reduced vaccine antibody response, pregnancy-related hypertension and preeclampsia, certain cancers, and additional health concerns.
Vermont state Treasurer Mike Pieciak and area lawmakers met with over 100 people Saturday at a Brattleboro meeting to discuss federal cutbacks. Several area residents spoke about job and program cuts , and discussed how to respond . House ways and means committee chair Emilie Kornheiser of Brattleboro says the state will be able to backfill some, but not all of the federal cuts , and heartbreaking decisions may be ahead for lawmakers. The task force headed by Pieciak held a second discussion in South Burlington.
The New York State Police have announced the successful apprehension of the individual who prompted a manhunt on Friday evening. Collen Gardner, a resident of Sheldon, Vermont, was taken into custody without incident. Authorities reported that he had violated his parole in Vermont. Gardner was thought to be hiding in a forested region near Mountain Springs Road in Westport. Law enforcement advised local residents to secure their homes, describing Gardner as armed and dangerous.
The Windham County Democratic Committee is set to host a St. Patrick’s Day rally today at 5:30 p.m. at the Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, VT.
