A Brattleboro man died in a single car accident Sunday morning on Route 5 in Dummerston. Vermont State police say 32 year old Thomas Stockton Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial investigation revealed the operator was traveling southbound on Route 5 just before 9 A M, when he failed to maintain his lane and drove off the west side of the roadway, colliding with a tree. This crash is still under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Trooper Guillaume at the Westminster Barracks.
Two men arrested over Thanksgiving weekend in Bellows Falls are due in court today . Shalliek Ivory of Brooklyn, and Vincent Williams of Burlington, were arrested Wednesday night after a traffic stop . Bellows Falls police say both men face drug charges. Willians was also charged with having an outstanding warrant. Williams was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 cash/surety bail while Ivory was ordered held in lieu of $20,000 cash/surety bail.
The new route 119 bridge between Brattleboro and Hinsdale is scheduled to open Thursday. This week flaggers will be at the intersections near the new bridge and there will be traffic delays. Alternating one way traffic on Route 142 will continue until the bridge opens.
The Federal Nuclear Waste Policy Committee of the Vermont Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel will meet today at noon. A hybrid format will be used for this meeting. In accordance with Vermont Open Meeting Law, those wishing to attend this meeting in-person can meet at the Governor Hunt House in Vernon Limited parking is available in the lot next to the Governor Hunt House along Vermont Yankee Drive. After more than two years of planning and working with the State and FEMA, the general store and home in South Newfane will be coming down. Demolition begins today and is expected to take a week to complete. All roads will remain open during the process but traffic may move slower at different points in the process. Newfane select board members say they wish there had been some possibility of restoring and reopening the store and renovating the home, the costs were prohibitive. This was an opportunity to remove what had become an eyesore in the community and an unsafe building.
More Vermont and New Hampshire residents are cutting their own Christmas trees. A large population close to the more than 400 growers allows people to pick their own or cut their own tree . Some growers even allow pre season visits to the farm for tagging in advance. Today, Governor Phil Scott, Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts and others will celebrate the Christmas season with the help of Vermont’s farmers at Whitcomb Family Tree Farm in Essex Junction.
