A proposed bill in Washington aims to prevent local officials from receiving tips for their official actions. Introduced by Sen. Peter Welch, the Stop Corrupt Gratuities Act seeks to address corrupt payments and enhance public trust in local governments. Welch argues that a recent Supreme Court ruling, Snyder v. United States, has weakened federal anti-corruption laws, allowing state and local officials to accept tips, which he deems bribery that undermines democracy. The bill would classify gratuities or gifts meant as rewards for official duties as illegal under federal law.
