Vermont farms are assessing the damage from this month’s flooding, with losses exceeding $2.5 million, as reported by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. So far, 54 farmers have participated in the survey, primarily from Chittenden County. Following last year’s flooding, which resulted in over $16 million in losses, some are considering relocating to higher ground; however, farmers argue that this is not a straightforward solution. The U.S. Department of Agriculture noted that an acre of Vermont farmland sold for $4,600 last year, reflecting a 9.5% increase from 2022, indicating that costs hinder relocation efforts.
