The Vermont State Police have provided additional information regarding a tragic incident at a residence in St. Johnsbury that resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Sunday. The victims involved in the altercation on Sunday have been identified as 21-year-old Ben Lyons and 42-year-old Nicholas Johnson. Lyons, a resident of the home at 16 Cottage Street, succumbed to a stab wound to the neck and passed away at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on Sunday afternoon. His mother, 44-year-old Jennifer Bradley, sustained minor injuries. Johnson, who did not have a permanent address, died at the scene on Sunday morning from a gunshot wound. Investigators revealed that he and Bradley were former partners, and he had been residing in the St. Johnsbury area. Both deaths have been classified as homicides. Additionally, 33-year-old Patrick Mayhew sustained serious but non-life-threatening knife wounds. Police have confirmed that he is currently married to Bradley.
The Vermont Department of Health confirmed another case of measles in the state. The infected individual was exposed to measles in Hanover, New Hampshire, in late June. The person was a passenger on a northbound Dartmouth Coach bus from New York City to Hanover on July 3. No other passengers are Vermont residents, and there is no ongoing transmission risk to other Vermonters. This is the second confirmed case of measles in Vermont this year.
Authorities in Hanover, New Hampshire, have reported that a Dartmouth student has passed away after being reported missing near Boathouse Road close to the docks along the Connecticut River. Witnesses have stated that Won Jang, aged 20, was last seen in that vicinity at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday around 7:30 p.m., search teams found Won Jang’s body approximately 65 feet away from the shore. Law enforcement officials have mentioned that they are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death, although foul play is not suspected.
The third-place finisher in Vermont’s last two elections for governor, Kevin Hoyt, 52, has pleaded not guilty to intentionally violating an anti-stalking order. Fair Haven Police arrested him on Route 22A on July 4 after an anonymous tip. He’s accused of violating a no-stalking order three separate times in 2022, leading to a misdemeanor count against him each time. The order barred Hoyt from any contact with former state Rep. Christopher Bates of Bennington in person, by phone, by mail, or online — including social media. Hoyt’s next scheduled court date is September 9; he could spend up to a year in jail on each count if he’s convicted.
Vermont residents are once again confronted with significant premium hikes for the year 2025 as a result of the combined effects of hospital expenses, pharmaceutical costs, and decisions made regarding state healthcare policies. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont anticipates that these patterns will persist, necessitating rate hikes of 16.3% for individual health insurance plans and 19.1% for small-group plans for Vermonters enrolled in Vermont Health Connect. Meanwhile, MVP Health Care is suggesting an average rise of 11.7% for individual plan premiums and a 9.3% increase for small-group plan premiums.
Flash flooding may occur later this week as we mark the 1-year anniversary of one of Vermont’s worst storms. Tuesday morning will be calm with cloudy skies and a chance of a morning shower. The afternoon will bring more sunshine, leading to isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from the 80s to near 90 degrees. However, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday and Thursday as remnants of Beryl move in from the southwest. Some areas could see 2-4 inches or more of rain, increasing the risk of flash flooding, particularly between 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday. Rain will persist overnight before tapering off on Thursday morning.
