Vermont State Police confirm that the body found Tuesday in Troy is a
woman that was reported missing over the weekend. An autopsy
confirmed that 29-year-old Kayla Wright, of Derby, died of a gunshot
wound to the head. State Police are ruling her death a homicide. At
this point, no suspects are in custody for the homicide. However,
three people have been arrested on federal charges with conspiracy
to distribute illegal drugs. The three individuals, identified as Bryanna
Rooney, Thomas Rooney, the owners of the home where Wright had
been staying, and Jakiy Tramaine Corey Keith, were taken into
custody following a federal raid on a home on VT Route 100 in North
Troy connected to an investigation into Wright’s death. According to
federal court documents, Wright had been staying at the home
around the time of her death. Anyone that has information that could
help the police is asked to contact the Derby Barracks at 802-334-
8881.
Police have identified the man who was found dead in Pownal on Tuesday as Casey Gras, 36, of Bennington. Gras died of multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and chest. Police are investigating the homicide but have not made any arrests. They also said that they did not believe there was any broader threat to the community.
A 26-year-old Vermonter is facing additional charges after an incident
at Springfield’s Southern State Correctional Facility. Vermont State
Police say Jayden Vondoemming, an inmate at SSCF, assaulted five
officers in January. Vondoemming was issued a citation to appear in
court later this month. He is expected to face a judge on February 20.
Police are investigating a gunfire incident in Thetford. It happened
Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m. Vermont state police and Thetford
police were called to a report of gunshots at the intersection of US
Route 5 and VT Route 113 in Thetford. When the police arrived, the
vehicles involved were gone. Anyone with information on the incident
is asked to contact the police in Thetford at 802-785-2200. They are
also asking people who live nearby to check their security cameras.
They would like to hear from anyone who captured video of a full-
sized truck between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. within two miles of that
intersection. Police say they believe this was an isolated incident and
there is not an ongoing threat.
Comments caught on microphone Wednesday by a member of
the Vermont Criminal Justice Council prompted his resignation from
the council. “You’re [expletive] here illegally.” That statement made
by council member Mike Major came on the heels of a statement
made by a guest speaking in Spanish. The guest, part of the
group Migrant Justice, had been invited to speak by the council. The
discussion was about the council removing the Fair and Impartial
Policing Policy from the meeting’s agenda. Major apologized, saying
he did not mean for his comments to be heard by the council or the
public, and said he was talking to his daughter, not the council. He
tendered his resignation from the council during the meeting, where
he was serving as a representative of the Vermont Police Association.
With almost 1,500 students in adult education programs statewide,
program directors say the services are still needed but underfunded.
Vermont has 17 adult education programs to help adults and high
school-aged students get their diplomas. The number of adult
students seeking education fluctuates, but the needs of those
students have increased, according to a new report to the Legislature.
After a few years of testimony, the Legislature gave adult education
one-time extra funding of $350,000 last session. The new report aims
to pinpoint where funding could be allocated to make the
programming, more secure.
