Gas prices are dipping lower in Vermont. According to gas buddy dot com, the average price of regular gas is now $3.68 per gallon, seven cents lower than a week ago. The gas price has dropped 14 cents per gallon in the last month. The lowest price in the state was found in Brattleboro, at 3.19 a gallon.
All Vermont Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) offices will be closed to the public November 8-14 in order to implement the major computer system upgrade that the Department has been working on for the past year, and also to conduct the necessary employee training.There will be no online vehicle registration renewals or replacements from November 5-12. All other online services will be available, but credit card payment processing may be delayed during this time. Customers will be able to use the online scheduling system to make appointments after the offices reopen for in-person business.
Vermont Senator Peter Welch has a new bill aimed at expanding federal support for organic dairy farmers and extending emergency assistance to farmers . The bill also increases investments in the organic dairy industry to ensure resiliency and longevity, and works to improve data collection for organic milk production to enhance price accuracy and transparency. According to Welch, he wants to promote the long-term sustainability and growth of organic dairy farming in Vermont and across the country.
Applications are now open for the largest ever state investment in Vermont maple operations. $540,000 in available funds was allocated by the Vermont State Legislature for Maple Development Grants .Maple operations are eligible to apply for $15,000 to $100,000 in funds. with no match requirement.
New Hampshire has formed a Northern Border Alliance Task Force composed of state, county, and local law enforcement officers. The Task Force will conduct patrols along the northern border to: reduce the occurrence of crimes and illicit activity; respond to all threats, all crimes, all hazards; and collect, share, and act upon criminal intelligence. The Task Force will also cooperate, as needed, with federal law enforcement officers in the enforcement of federal criminal immigration laws. The Northern Border Alliance Task Force will be funded by the Department of Safety, which has $1.4 million dollars in grant funds available to fund patrols within 25 air miles from the Canadian border.
The Castleton community will come together this weekend to honor the woman who was killed on a local rail trail earlier this month. The community will pay tribute to Honoree Fleming, who was killed on Oct. 5 on the D&H Rail Trail. The memorial will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22 on the Vermont State University Castleton Campus at 2 p.m. Police are still looking for the person suspected of killing Fleming. A sketch of the person was released to the public several days after her death. The person was described as a white man in his 20s with short red hair. Police are asking anyone who recognizes this person to contact 911 immediately.
Vermont State Police have arrested the man who they say stole a police cruiser and a patrol rifle. Police arrested Timothy Gabriel, 29, on Cherry Street in Burlington after they saw him walking in the area around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. When police confronted Gabriel, they say he ignored their commands. He was eventually arrested. Gabriel is accused of stealing the police cruiser from outside the home of Vt. State Police Cpl. Christopher Loyzelle in Rutland early Tuesday morning. Loyzelle had gone off duty a few hours prior. Police say they are still investigating how the cruiser was taken. Investigators say the stolen rifle is still missing. Gabriel faces federal charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.
