A Brattleboro man has been jailed on charges related to a pre-dawn home invasion at an Elliot street residence Tuesday. Police say 43 year old Nathan Couture fled on foot after the 3AM incident, but was captured by police on Flat Street several hours later. While an officer  was attempting to take Couture into custody he resisted arrest and assaulted the Officer numerous times causing minor injuries to the Officer. The Officer was able to gain control of Couture before other Police units arrived.Couture was transported to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for minor injuries he sustained while resisting arrest. Couture was later transported to the Brattleboro Police Department for processing and ordered held on 50 thousand dollars bail. 

 

A Brattleboro man has been charged for allegedly threatening  someone with a gun. 33 year old Bryan Wainwright was cited after authorities investigated the complaint at a Marlboro Road Address. Arraignment has been scheduled for October 19th.

 

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen is urging the U S Senate to confirm Jack Lew to be Ambassador to Israel . Shaheen questioned Lew in a Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing, saying the United States and Israel urgently need an American Ambassador in place to support Israel’s right to defend itself from all terrorist attacks. The New Hampshire Senator is a senior member of the committee.

 

Vermonter Michael Whitaker has received senate  committee approval for his nomination to be the next Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. Senator Peter Welch says the commerce committee approved the nomination. Welch had provided opening remarks  in support of Whitaker at his nomination hearing in early October.

 

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation  and the Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative have begun a statewide planning effort to create and sustain opportunities that strengthen Vermont’s outdoor recreation spaces and communities.

This initiative will include multiple stakeholder surveys, focus groups, and workshops with a technical Advisory Committee and the statewide Steering Committee.  The  Vermont State of Recreation Survey 2023 is open for recreation providers such as municipalities, non-profit trails organizations, and recreation districts.

 

FEMA officials Wednesday said they have now allocated more than $78 million dollars in federal aid for the July flooding. More than $22 million went to the Individual and Households Program grants. FEMA has extended the deadline to apply for individual assistance to October 31st and officials say people are still signing up. A total of 6,165 Vermonters have submitted applications. The SBA has also approved more than $23.9 million dollars in 501 long-term disaster loans.

 

Police have identified the victim in a fatal shooting in Wheelock. Vermont State Police say Gunnar Watson, 27, was found dead in his home on Route 16 Monday at about 6:30 a.m. Investigators say Watson died from a gunshot wound to the torso and they’re calling it a homicide. No suspects are in custody. The Wheelock case is one of two shooting deaths state police are currently investigating in the Northeast Kingdom. The other homicide was in Newport Town on Saturday night. Police identified the victim in that case as Wilmer Rodriguez, 27, of Hartford, Connecticut. Investigators said Monday they do not believe the two cases are related.

 

After a troubling trend in the wrong direction, opioid overdose deaths in New Hampshire’s two largest cities are dropping. The opioid epidemic had been made worse by fentanyl, which saw a surge in the early months of 2023. But overdose numbers and deaths are now showing an encouraging trend. So far this year in Nashua, opioid overdoses are trending 12% lower than last year. Overdose deaths are trending 9% lower than last year. In Manchester, while overdoses are trending 3% higher than last year, overdose deaths in the city have seen a significant drop sofar — 20% less.
