Brattleboro select board members on Tuesday will be asked to go with a fully municipal E M S service effective next July and start preparing for that transition. Two other groups, including Rescue Inc, had submitted proposals for service. Meanwhile a community group says it plans to submit a petition in support of restoring Rescue as the service provider.

M&T Bank’s downtown Brattleboro branch has closed. The building at the corner of Main and Elliot Streets had been a banking center for over a century. M&T says its Canal Street branch will remain open.

Vermont Senator Peter Welch is urging his senate colleagues to advance the Credit Card Competition Act. He says the bipartisan legislation would restore choice and competition to the credit card market and bring down costs for small businesses in Vermont and across America. Welch says credit card swipe fees are hurting the ability of small businesses in rural America to succeed. Recent reports suggest Visa and Mastercard, the two credit card companies that have a duopoly in the market, have decided to increase fees imposed on merchants and consumers this fall through new credit card fees or interchange fees.

Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas says a painting called The Light of Truth Upon Them, a painting that commemorates voting and the centennial of the 19 the Amendment, will be temporarily exhibited in the Secretary’s State Street office for the next few months. The painting by artist Cynthia Cagle was commissioned by the Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance. Secretary Copeland Hanzas is Vermont’s third female Secretary of State and for the first time in the state’s history, both the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of State are women.

The federal flood Disaster Recovery Center in Wardsboro will cease operations at 6 p.m. Monday, September 18, and relocate to Ludlow. It will reopen at 8 a.m. September 20, and continue with regular hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sunday. The Vermont Department of Labor reminds Vermonters impacted by the July 2023 flood that the federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits application deadline is September 29, 2023, for those living or working in Windham County or other eligible counties. Under this declaration, individuals living, working, or scheduled to work in these counties may be eligible. This includes independent contractors, those who are self-employed, and agricultural workers.

Locally, in Boy’s High School Football action, as heard on your home Bears sports, 99 The Beast, and 99 5 The Beast Dot Com, Trevor Gray’s kick-off return for a touchdown to open the second half proved to be the difference as Brattleboro went on to beat Mt. Anthony in Bennington last night, 14-9, to reclaim the Elwell Trophy and bring it back to Brattleboro. Brattleboro visits Keene next Friday night.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run homer to lead Toronto past Boston last night, 3-0. The teams play again this afternoon, Chris Sale on the mound for Boston, first pitch is at 3:05.

The Yankees rallied in the top of the 9th last night to go on to beat Pittsburgh, 7-5. The teams play again tonight, Luke Weaver on the mound for New York, first pitch is at 6:35.
