Mark Speno will continue as superintendent of the Windham Southeast supervisory Union. In a prepared statement, w s e s u directors say Speno has been appointed to continue in the 2022 23 school year  The Board, in it’s statement, said it is looking forward to collaborating with  Speno, expanding on his excellent work supporting students and staff and extending it into effective implementation of policies and continuous improvement. Kerry Amidon, Vernon’s lone representative on the governing board, voted against the single year contract, saying the needs of our two districts are better served when our superintendent has the tenure to enact long range plans.  The appointment had been held up by turnover on the school board this March.

The Vermont Department of Health says  COVID-19 cases are down and hospitalizations also have fallen and the number of patients with COVID-19 who are still in the hospital increased by one person.  As of May 31, there have been 661 deaths from COVID-19 in Vermont, unchanged from May 17.Vermont has the second fewest deaths per capita in the US  behind only Hawaii . 

Vermont State Police on Wednesday, , arrested a suspect in the 2019 homicide of a woman whose remains were found in a shallow grave in Searsburg.

 32 year old Deven  Moffitt,  of Bennington was taken into custody on a charge of second-degree murder in the killing of 43 year old Jessica Hildenbrandt,  of Ballston Spa, New York. 

 The investigation began Sept. 17, 2019, when a man reported finding what appeared to be a human jawbone at a gravel pit on Somerset Road in Searsburg. Subsequent investigation by the Vermont State Police uncovered additional human remains at the site. In July 2020, the Vermont Forensic Laboratory successfully identified the victim as Hildenbrandt through DNA analysis,Moffitt was processed at the Shaftsbury Barracks after his arrest and ordered jailed without bail at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets wants you to  keep an eye out for the invasive pest known as spotted lanternfly during the spring landscaping season. This is due to the risk of egg masses being accidentally brought in on shipments of nursery stock imported from other states that may have an established spotted lanternfly  infestation.   This invasive bug is not yet known to have established a breeding population in Vermont. The Agency educates the nursery industry about the threat and actions that it can take to keep the invasive pest out of Vermont.

 

 Vermont Governor Phil Scott used a groundbreaking in Colchester to promote his administrations new housing program, According to Scott, cver a hundred million dollars has been approved The federal money has been directed to support those experiencing homelessness, identify permanent housing options, and build more affordable housing. The Governor is thanking the state’s  Congressional Delegation for their work, and  the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for their continued partnership.”

 New Hampshire police at the state and local level are expanding the use of dashboard and body cameras.More than 250 State Police cruisers have been equipped with front-facing and backseat cameras, and nearly all State Police units have been outfitted with body-worn cameras, The state  Executive Council on Wednesday approved $720,000 in match funds for the purchase of cameras for 29 police departments.

Governor Phil Scott signed new legislation into law modernizing Vermont’s captive insurance statutes and removing inconsistencies. This year’s bill, , proposed several updates to Vermont’s captive insurance law, including the ability for captive insurance companies to enter into parametric risk transfer contracts, simplifying reporting requirements, improving solvency procedures for sponsored cell captives, and clarifies an inconsistency related to the treatment of affiliated business in sponsored cell companies. Included in the captive bill this year was the passage of specific legislation that would allow for captive insurance companies to enter parametric risk transfer contracts. Parametric risk transfer contracts are becoming common place as another form of protection for catastrophic events.
