174 new Covid 19 cases were reported in Vermont Friday, with eight new positive tests in Windham County. In New Hampshire, there was one death and 86 new cases of the covid virus, including 12 in Cheshire County. Massachusetts reported 14 deaths and 677 new Covid 19 cases, including four new covid positive tests in Franklin County.
The Vermont State Police want your help to identify a pickup truck that was in the vicinity of an assault that occurred at about 9:20 p.m. Jan. 6, near Grace Cottage Hospital. Police would like to speak to the operator of the truck, who may have information that could assist in the ongoing investigation. The truck was captured on surveillance images and is believed to be a red Chevrolet Silverado from the approximate model years 2016-2018. The license plate was not visible. Anyone with information about this vehicle is asked to call 802-766-4600. Tips also may be submitted anonymously online at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit. This case remains an open and active investigation
The Vermont Senate has voted to override the Governor’s veto of a gun violence prevention bill that would close a loophole in the federal background check law. With 21 senators voting to override the Governor’s veto, the bill will now go back to the House, where a compromise bill; is being developed. Meanwhile, the house voted to override Governor Phil Scott’s veto of Brattleboro Charter change that would allow 16 and 17 year-olds to vote in local elections and hold local office. The senate will vote on the override next week.
It’s Town Meeting Day today in Hinsdale and Chesterfield. Hinsdale residents will act on their school and town warning beginning at 9 in the High School Gym. Chesterfield will hold their school and town meetings in the Chesterfield school beginning at 10.
Patrick Leahy says the U S Senate has passed a comprehensive government funding bill. Leahy has listed more than $167 million in funding for specific Vermont projects across the state that are the fiscal year 2022 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which funds the federal government for the rest of this fiscal year. Leahy has headed the Senate negotiations for the last several months.
The Vermont Senate has given final approval to a bill that would ban public schools from having discriminatory mascots or nicknames. The measure still must be considered by the House. It comes as a number of Vermont school districts in recent years have changed mascots and nicknames considered to be offensive, causing division in some communities. Sen. Brian Campion, a Democrat, says with the legislation, the Senate Committee on Education wants to ensure that “Vermont schools provide positive and inclusive learning environments for all students by eliminating the use of discriminatory school mascots.”
