The Vermont House of Representatives voted unanimously Tuesday to spend state money on supporting Ukrainians who are suffering during Russia’s violent and damaging military invasion of their country. The House bill directs a dollar for each and every Vermonter to be carved out of the state budget to spend on humanitarian aid for war-ravaged Ukraine. The issue will be taken up by the Vermont Senate later this week.

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen –is applauding final government funding legislation for fiscal year (FY) 2022 that includes $13.6 billion in military and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Shaheen has continuously advocated for military and economic assistance for Ukraine, and I applaud this latest action to deliver aid to our democratic partners. The Democrat says what happens in Ukraine matters for Ukraine, NATO allies, the United States and the security of the international community.

World Learning is observing its 90th anniversary since sociologist Donald Watt launched The Experiment in International Living in 1932. This flagship program focusing on intercultural exchange led to the establishment of both School for International Training and World Learning. The Experiment began in 1932 with Watt’s vision promoting peace through intercultural understanding by taking young Americans abroad to live with and learn from other cultures. Ninety-years later, that experiential learning approach remains the bedrock of The Experiment’s life-changing programs for high school students. It is also the foundational principle behind the organizations that grew from Watt’s original experiment: School for International Training, an accredited provider of undergraduate and graduate education on seven continents; and World Learning, a global nonprofit organization with education, development, and exchange programs spanning more than 150 countries.

Vermont law enforcement agencies are teaming up to donate used and expired body-armor vests to military units in Ukraine. Members of the public also may donate any body-armor vests they have, provided the vests have a rating of level III or more, to their nearest Vermont State Police barracks. Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 10 barracks statewide until March 23. After that, the vests will be collected throughout the state and packaged for shipment to Ukraine.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says more than $38 million he requested on behalf of Vermont initiatives were included in the major government funding bill expected to pass Congress this week. Sanders’ initiatives will strengthen Vermont communities and meet Vermonters’ needs across a wide range of issues, from child care and sustainable energy, to health care, dental care, wastewater infrastructure, housing, education, and services for veterans’ and military personnel. The government funding deal, made public today, awaits passage by the House and the Senate, and will then be sent to President Biden to be signed into law.
